Naughty Dog has been working on a new project called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. It was first announced last year at The Game Awards and while there have been leaks about cancelled projects at the company, this one in particular seems to be going strong. Not a lot is known about the game but a new leak hints at a true RPG progression system, which would be a first for Naughty Dog.
The company touts the game to have the “deepest gameplay in Naughty Dog’s history” which was the first hint at an RPG like system. Now, as spotted by Reddit user 22Seres, a LinkedIn profile for a designer who worked at Naughty Dog from August 2022 to February 2024 states “RPG progression system on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.” This, combined with Naughty Dog’s description, suggests the game will feature a true RPG element involving upgrading equipment, unlocking skills, and more.
It should be noted that the mention of an RPG progression system could mean a lot of things and not necessarily a traditional type of RPG. Some commentors argue that the supplements system in The Last of Us was also an RPG element since it upgraded Joel’s different skills. Regardless, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is gearing up to be more than a linear campaign like some of the other Naughty Dog AAA titles.
The game tells the story of Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter who ends up stranded on a distant mysterious planet. “Jordan will have to use all her skills and wits if she hopes to be the first person in over 600 years to leave its orbit,” the official description explains. The game is being developed for the PS5 but there is no release date as of yet.
