Google Smart Home Summit: Android TV "Sabrina" streaming stick and Nest-branded "Prince" speaker expected to launch at July 8 event
Google has quietly announced that it will be hosting a new event in a week's time called the Works With "Hey Google" Smart Home Summit. The event begins on July 8 with a keynote at 18:00 BST (UTC+01:00), which Google will then follow with a Q&A session that includes representations from IKEA, LG, Vizio and Tuya.
It is unclear whether Google plans to announce any hardware at this event. However, we doubt that the company would use it to unveil the belated Pixel 4a. It could be possible, but using a "Smart Home Summit" to announce a smartphone seems unlikely.
With that said, the company's upcoming Android TV dongle would tie well with the event. As we have previously reported, this device would be closer to an Amazon Fire TV Stick than a Chromecast and would run the full version of Android TV. According to multiple sources, Google has codenamed the device Sabrina.
Additionally, Chrome Unboxed posits that Google may announce a Nest-branded smart speaker next week too. According to 9to5Google, this device is codenamed prince and will replace the Google Home.
Google may well not unveil any hardware at the event next week, but its teaser image suggests that a few things could be on the cards. Similarly, the company states that it will use the event to showcase "new and upcoming features for smart home developers and users", so it may not focus entirely on software.
