Exciting Sony Xperia 5 IV price leak joins potential approaching release date hints
There is some potentially exciting news for Sony Xperia fans who may have been waiting for the Mark 4 edition of the popular Xperia 5 line. The smartphone has already been spotted on the FCC, which is a good sign in itself, and it appears there has been a potential price leak. According to a Weibo-based tipster, the Sony Xperia 5 IV could actually end up having the same launch price tag as its predecessor. This would mean it would cost either US$999.99 or £899 at launch time.
The mysterious leaker shared a snippet of HTML code that was apparently connected to the Xperia 5 IV that showed a price tag for the Hong Kong market of HK$7,599.00 (US$968). This is the same launch price (and current price) for the Xperia 5 III that is listed on Sony’s Hong Kong website. While it may seem insensible to release a new smartphone at the same price as its predecessor, SmartphoneDigest (in Japanese) has offered up a decent argument as to why this could be the case.
The outlet suggests that Sony may have performed some cost-cutting exercises on the Xperia 5 IV to enable a launch price tag that matches the 2021 model. However, it is believed the Sony Xperia 5 IV will offer upgrades such as wireless charging, 12 GB RAM (8 GB for its predecessor), and, of course, a processor improvement, possibly from the Snapdragon 888 to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or even to the 8+ Gen 1 chip. So, it would most likely be the display that features cost-cutting changes, if there are any.
As for Xperia 5 IV release date hints, on top of the FCC listing there is the appearance of this purported price tag to consider and the fact that Sony US currently has the Xperia 5 III discounted from US$999.99 to US$799.99. The same device is now priced at £699 in the UK. It’s also worth considering when the older model was released, which was in October 2021. However, despite those indicators of a possible incoming launch, the same source who offered this price leak also claims that another new Xperia is coming first, which could be a 2022 Sony Xperia PRO phone.
