Sony has started dropping hints about the Xperia 5 IV, a follow up to last year's Xperia 5 III and a smaller alternative to the new Xperia 1 IV. For some reason, Sony decided against announcing the Xperia 1 IV and Xperia 5 IV simultaneously, as it did with the Xperia 1 III and the Xperia 5 III. In saying that, the company released the Xperia 1 III two months earlier than the Xperia 5 III, which did not reach shelves until October 2021.
As the image below shows, the Sony Xperia Instagram channel mentioned the Xperia 5 IV in a post, which it has since deleted. While this could be a typo, '1' and '5' are not close to each other on a keyboard. However, the post also contains the error 'wordclass', rather than world-class.
Additionally, Sony France has also dropped hints that an Xperia 5 IV is in the offing. In the video below, a Sony France employee refuses to deny the existence of the Xperia 5 IV while on the topic of Sony's plans for summer and autumn 2022. Based on the release date of the Xperia 5 III and Android OEMs' propensity to launch flagship smartphones twice a year, we would not be surprised if Sony started shipping the Xperia 5 IV in the autumn. If the Xperia 1 IV is anything to go by, we could see an Xperia 5 IV this side of the summer, with another long lead time to its release.
