For the money, the Studio 15 is a very well equipped laptop and its performance scores are not to be sniffed at. It may not be the most portable of machines and its battery life is a little on the low side, but if you're happy to stay still and near mains power you won't be disappointed. Add in the ability to choose a distinctive case design and you've got a good looking, well specified, decent performing laptop for a reasonable price tag.

This summer, Dell updated its Studio line with colorful cases and a gorgeous high-definition screen. The laptop calls to mind other entertainment notebooks, such as the higher-end Dell Studio XPS 16 and the Lenovo Ideapad Y650, but it starts at just $599, a fraction of the cost. We tested a $1,094 configuration and found that the new Studio 15 has strong performance to match its striking looks. The Studio 15’s stylish (and customizable) case, gorgeous screen, and strong performance make it a media lover’s dream.

Dell's 15" Studio is the best all-round mainstream laptop currently available at this price.  Those seeking a gaming laptop should look elsewhere, but for practically every other use the Dell Studio 15 is comfortably the best in this group test. Its all-round abilities are amazing, especially considering the price, and we feel it's the best mainstream laptop you can currently buy.

Dell's Studio 15 laptop is designed as an alternative to the lower cost Inspiron or the more expensive XPS. While it does offer some compelling features and very attractive price, it ends up as a fairly average thin and light system. Dell offers a wide range of configuration options that can match a wide range of budget and features but they fall short in a couple of areas. First, the dedicated graphics are quite weak compared to other company offerings and the case is thicker than it really should be.

Dell's Studio 15 can be characterised in two ways. Without the 1,440 x 900 it's a very good, but not quite outstanding, 15.4 inch notebook that has a strong but not dazzling design - not at least till you opt for the Mike Ming lid designs - and standard feature sets and pricing that are competitive but not outrageously so. With the 1,440 x 900 WLED display, however, you have a different proposition entirely. It's a feature that few can offer and given you can have it and not sacrifice too much in terms of specification or price over competing models, it helps elevate the Studio 15 to an award.

New lines from Dell don't come along too often, so the recently announced Studio line has understandably garnered plenty of column inches. Designed to sit between the low-end Inspiron and high-end XPS families, it comes in 15in and 17in flavours and its target audience could be pretty much anyone: few laptops are as customisable as this. A solid, stylish and comfortable debut, but it's too expensive in this configuration

At the end of the day the Studio 15 is a solid offering in the 15-inch consumer notebook category. The build quality, range of customizable options, expandability, style, and price make this an excellent choice if you're in the market for a 15-inch notebook. Still, we would have liked to see more graphics card options than just the integrated Intel X3100 and dedicated ATI Radeon HD 3450. Issues like lack of VGA cable screw posts, dedicated docking station connector, or lack of a simple RAM expansion cover are minor, and many experienced users may find the all-in-one access panel on the bottom of the notebook to be extremely helpful. The pre-configured model we tested suffered from weak integrated graphics that ruined an otherwise enjoyable experience, but configurations with dedicated graphics are available from Dell.com.

Parsing the intended markets for Dell's ever-shifting in-house brand names requires some tea-leaf reading. It's been easier lately, with the company stripping down its consumer brands to just the Inspiron and XPS lines. Now the company is adding a new line between the budget Inspiron and the high-end XPS. The new Studio line, as personified by the 15.4-inch Studio 15, has the same tapered shape, slot-loading optical drive and rounded hinge as the Dell XPS M1530, but a similarly configured Studio system costs roughly £350 less than a similarly outfitted XPS. Dell's first release from its new Studio line, the Studio 15, sits between the Inspiron and XPS lines and offers a good mix of features for the price, but we'd be tempted to save up a few extra pounds for a thinner, lighter XPS.

When Dell crossed the bargain pricing of its Inspiron laptops with the design sense of its XPS line, something sensational emerged—a new mainstream laptop line called Dell Studio. With the new line, Dell hopes to reel in the latest generation of back-to-schoolers, content creators, social-network addicts, and camera enthusiasts, just to name a few groups. Retaining many of the XPS's qualities while selling it for Inspiron prices is what makes this Studio laptop a winner.

While it may lack the cachet of a Sony VAIO or Apple MacBook, at this price there are very few laptops that can compete with Dell’s Studio 1525. Excellent quality, usability and great performance combine to make it one of the best mainstream laptops you can currently buy. We recommend staying away from the optional extras, however, as it’s easy to turn this machine from a reasonable value machine into one costing considerably more.

Overall the Dell Studio 1537 is a stylish machine that is powerful enough to handle your media without breaking the bank. The modern Intel Core 2 Duo CPU along with 4GB RAM and a 320GB HDD go a long way when combined with a dedicated GPU, although not quite as far as we were hoping. Still, the colorful lid, extremely bright display and attractive overall design make the Studio a desirable laptop at a desirable price.

Despite this, it's hard not to come away a little disheartened from our first encounter with the Studio 1555, however. Dell's Studio range of notebooks failed to bowl us over when it strode into view in the tail end of last year and, if anything, the Studio 1555 takes a step backwards from there. The good looks, solid performance and keen pricing may be enough to tempt some prospective buyers away from its budget rivals but, ultimately, the iffy build quality and mediocre keyboard put paid to its class-leading aspirations.

Regular readers will recognise the Dell Studio 1555. We reviewed a version of it in July and went away very impressed, so impressed in fact that we gave it a 9/10 and a Recommended Award. However, as has been the case for a little while now, it's possible to buy Dell laptops from retailers like PC World, not just Dell itself. Today we're looking at it again in its retail incarnation, which is on sale for £599. If you buy the Dell Studio 1555 from your local hardware emporium you won't be disappointed, it's fundamentally a very good laptop with especially good battery life. However, if you're really keen on it, it's worth checking with Dell first to see if you can't get a little more bang for your buck.

The Dell Studio 1555 (USE006CS) ($799.list) is an affordable desktop replacement laptop that is neither too cheap to be called a recession special nor expensive enough to be labeled a power house. It falls into that perfect balance where all the parts are better than what you would expect to get at this price—and that's a great feeling. Though it isn't as afforable as the Gateway NV5807u ($600) or the HP Pavilion dv6t (1030us) ($750), its comprehensive array of ports, 500GB hard drive, and 6 hours of battery life more than justifies this price difference and earns it an Editors' Choice in our desktop replacement category. The Dell Studio 1555 edges past its budget rivals by including a bigger hard drive, more battery life, and a two-year warranty.

If you're after a flexible and powerful laptop for the home and occasional mobile use, the Studio 1555 is a very good option. Discrete graphics options mean it's also a reasonable gaming machine, while the backlit keyboard and Full HD display options will tantalise those with cash to burn.

The Dell Studio 15 (1555) offers an impressive balance of customizable features and performance at a fair price. The modern looks, custom lid options, and affordable upgrades are sure to make this a popular notebook for many consumers. Unfortunately, the weak speakers, lackluster build quality, and average port selection will probably leave several owners wanting more. If you're in the market for a nice family PC that has a fantastic range of multimedia features at a good price then the Dell Studio 15 is worth consideration. If you can't look beyond the flexible plastics and horrible speakers then luckily there are many alternatives on the market with 15-inch screens.

Dell’s Studio 15 has been around for a little while now, impressing on a number of levels. The widespread adoption of 16:9 widescreen displays meant it was only a matter of time before a major update appeared, and the latest Studio 1555 has a lot to live up to. Subtle revisions to Dell’s Studio 15 means it’s not that different to its predecessor, which isn’t a problem: it already offered better styling than most and excellent value for money. Dell reviews

Lower end of Graphics Cards for users who want to play games. New games should run on these cards, but only with decreased details and mediocre resolution.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450: Successor of the HD 2400 produced in 55nm (therefore with a faster clockspeed) and with DirectX 10.1 support. Avivo HD video support enables the gpu to decode HD videos. For modest casual gamers suited (demanding games run only in very low settings).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.

Only older games can be played fluently with these graphics chips (if they were not too demanding). Shared memory graphic cores in this category got the advantage of less heat production and longer battery runtimes. For office, internet, image processing, and video editing tasks these graphics chips are still useable without any restrictions.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.

These cards should be able to display all current games with fluent framerates but not all with high detail settings. Especially demanding games like Crysis, Age of Conan, or Mass Effect are only playable with lower settings. Less demanding (and older) games, like Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, or Battlefield 2142 can be played with higher detail levels.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570: Lower middle-class GPU that features a low shader count and a 64 / 128 Bit memory bus (according to AMD 64 Bit, according to some GPU-Z variants 128 Bit) but a high clock speed. Similar to the desktop Radeon 4550. Supports Avivo HD and DirectX 10.1.

>> Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

15.4: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. Nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.

>> To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.66 kg:

This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

2.8 kg:

This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.

77.45%: This rating is not convincing. It must be considered, that there exist hardly any laptops, which receive a rating below 60%. This notebook is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
