ASUS is focusing on more than just RGB lighting with the third incarnation of its ROG Strix Scar. The company has also included a nice security feature called Keystone along with a host of powerful hardware. The G531GW offers plenty on paper, but can it meet expectations?

We thoroughly approve of the premium feel of this machine, coupled with a 240Hz high refresh screen and heaps of power on tap for gaming. The price might make most people recoil in horror, but if you have the cash to splash why not go all out?

ASUS ROG has made its third-generation Strix Scar series of gaming laptops available in the Philippines months after the brand launched its RTX-equipped Scar II series. The third generation Scar introduces not just newer 9th-generation Intel Processors, but also a new, subtler design that’s supposed to keep the notebook’s beefy components cooler under sustained load.

I had a really good time with the ROG Strix Scar III, but I couldn’t help feeling that part of that was the nostalgia factor - I haven’t had a decent gaming PC for a little under five years. In reality, the Scar III doesn’t really do much that other gaming laptops don’t. While you’d be perfectly happy with its performance, you might be better off with building your own PC with the same components - unless you need the laptop form factor or ROG's AuraSync lighting, you’re not missing anything here.

It was never fun playing FPS games on a laptop, its ergonomics were poor, the feedback from the keypad touches couldn’t match up with a USB keyboard and the weird positioning of the buttons, also the touchpad being a major obstacle for my hand’s range of movement. This was back in 2012, but times have changed now and so have the laptops. Let’s find out what the Strix Scar II in 2019 has to offer?

Put simply, if you want a high-performance gaming laptop with all the bells-and-whistles in a form factor that can comfortably fit inside a backpack, the ASUS ROG Strix Scar III G531GW-AZ055R is a strong choice. 32GB of DDR4, an eight-core Core i9 CPU, the non-Max-Q RTX 2070, and a 240Hz screen aren’t easy to find in a chassis of this relative slenderness with such strong build quality, but ASUS delivers well.

ASUS ROG Strix G531 is a laptop with a lot of potentials. It has the latest Intel processors and a wide variety of graphics card options. Moreover, there is a snappy 120Hz display option and a sturdy, though plastic, design. However, we were left with mixed feelings after our time with the device.

The ASUS ROG Strix G G531 is the kind of gaming laptop that you can boast to your friends given its RGB lighting setup on almost all sides including the keyboard. Its 120Hz refresh rate is excellent, especially if you’re playing games that can utilize this display technology. The overall performance is respectable thanks to its Intel Core i7-9750H processor; however, the 8GB of RAM could be a bottleneck, especially if you’re running multiple resource-heavy applications at the same time. You can add another stick, though, but that would cost you extra. Nevertheless, It has an impressive battery life, and it is very portable, given that it is thin and light.

The ROG Scar III is a full-size 15-inch notebook that doesn't compromise on performance and thermals. These are its primary selling points, but it also gets the other modern bells and whistles you'd expect from a gaming laptop these days: strong construction, RGB lighting, fast 240 Hz IPS screen, and punchy speakers, all in a competitively priced package. Potential buyers would, however, have to accept its noisy fans, bulkier size, and shorter battery life, among others, compared to the performance ultraportable options out there.

Unfortunately, the default configuration available locally has just 16GB of single-channel memory, which seriously affects its performance in games. Of course, you can quite easily add on a second stick, at which point the laptop really shines, but the idea of having to purchase a single RAM stick and install it sounds like a lot of hassle that nobody wants.

When I buy a gaming laptop, I want it to work right the moment I power it on. ASUS says that leaving one of the DIMM slots free helps customers save because they can simply buy one more stick of RAM instead of, say, a 2x16GB kit (if they were upgrading from 2x8GB), but it still doesn't seem worth it to me. Furthermore, the performance deficit that comes with single-channel memory is massive, and it doesn't seem right that I'd have to pay more to upgrade the laptop in order to get my money's worth.

The Asus ROG Strix G is overall a great gaming laptop especially when you consider its price. Surely, the display could have been better for a ROG laptop but if you can compromise with that, the rest of the package will keep you happy. The performance is smooth and consistent due to its excellent thermal management. Additionally, the aggressive design with the now-signature wraparound RGB LED lighting makes for a gaming laptop that will keep the smile plastered on your face for long. Starting at Rs 57,990 on e-commerce websites, it's an unbeatable option for gamers on a budget.

Asus ROG Strix G531GT-BQ012
Everyday, there is another gaming laptop hitting the market. Maybe because of new hardware or because of competition or maybe, just maybe because the manufacturer wanted to try something new. Then there is also price point. There is upper , lower, and of course middle segment. The Asus ROG Strix G531GT-BQ012 is nothing extraordinary, it is just a gaming laptop for people who think about their budget. Does it make it a bad laptop? Of course not. Especially considering the fact that improved hardware makes it easier to access high performing modules cheaper as days pass. Yesterday's high performing devices may not be able to compete with today's middle level devices. With this definition I would identify the Asus ROG Strix G531GT-BQ012 as a high performing device as well, even though it is considered as a budget gaming laptop. Looking at the specs, you are getting almost all new tech. A GTX 1650 GPU, 9th generation Intel 9750H CPU, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, WIFI5, HDMI 2.0b, Bluetooth 5.0… So from hardware specs, I can not think of anything to criticize harshly. It is well adjusted and seems like well thought. Maybe a USB-C port would have been nice, but remind you, this is a budget laptop. Let me explain why the Asus ROG Strix G531GT-BQ012 is a budget laptop. First of all, it weighs around 2.4 kg. With modern world standards, this is not mobile friendly. Then compared to RTX GPUs, GTX GPUs are not the future. If you are a hardcore gamer, you might be missing out on better details. Can the GTX 1650 serve you well? It depends on which games you are playing. Also the screen is only 60 Hz. With newest gaming laptops you can get screens from 75 Hz to 200 Hz. So, 60 Hz again is something from the past for gaming devices. I am used to LEDs on laptops, but the Asus ROG Strix G531GT-BQ012 also has LEDs around the base unit. So, you truly stand out from the crowd. It is definitely not my taste, but obviously there are people willing to have such shiny things. One thing to criticize can be storage. If you are a gamer, is a 512 GB SSD really enough? It would have been nice to have a 1 TB HDD maybe, but then I assume the weight will come close to 2.7 kg. Would I suggest this laptop? It depends. If you are not a hardcore gamer, I can definitely suggest it, because there is nothing it can't do. If you are a hardcore gamer, well, please don't invest your money in this model, but save a few hundreds (maybe a thousands?) more and get something serious. What is the difference between hardcore gaming laptops and this one? Just two things: RTX GPU and 144 Hz Screen. But those two can be very costly. My overall assessment is definitely a thumbs up. Those newer options do not take away from the overall package offered here, however. The ROG Strix Hero III is fast, sleek, and well rounded, with decent battery life to boot. It's also easy to upgrade the core components. But whether it's worth buying or not depends on what kinds of deals you might find on this system, compared to what newer models are available. At the very least, though, the ROG Strix Hero III is worth considering.
