The new iPhone 17 series introduces faster wired charging, with all models except the iPhone Air able to reach 50% in about 20 minutes when paired with the new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter. Wireless charging remains capped at 25W, but the new iPhones now support the Qi2 25W standard, opening up faster speeds with third-party chargers as well.

At its recent "Awe Dropping" event, Apple launched its new iPhone 17 devices featuring larger batteries than the iPhone 16 series. Among other upgrades, Apple finally increased charging speeds across the lineup.

Last year, the iPhone 16 series was rumored to support up to 45W charging, although this was proved to be false. Real-world charging tests revealed the iPhone 16 Pro Max maxed out at around 39W and averaged the same 27W in regular conditions as the previous iPhones. The results were consistent with testing from PhoneArena, which confirmed the iPhone 16 series didn't charge any faster than before.

With the iPhone 17 series, every model, except for the slimmed-down iPhone Air, is getting faster charging speeds. The new lineup launched alongside the "40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max" (priced at $39 from Apple). While rated at 40W, this adapter can dynamically ramp up the output to 60W. According to Apple, this enables the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max to reach a 50% charge in about 20 minutes, an improvement over the 30 minutes it took the iPhone 16 series.

While it's still nowhere near Android phones like the OnePlus 13, it is a welcome upgrade. Apple has always been so careful not to push ridiculously fast charging speeds on the iPhone to protect the batteries, so it's nice to finally get an upgrade.

New Qi2 25W certified MagSafe charger released

Wireless charging speeds remain the same as the iPhone 16 series, but the new phones are now Qi2 25W certified, which means users should be able to charge the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max at 25W wirelessly using third-party Qi2 25W-certified chargers, not just the official MagSafe puck.

Speaking of which, the official MagSafe charger has also been updated to support Qi2 25W. That means it can also be used to top up other Qi2 25W-certified phones like the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL at the maximum 25W speeds.

The updated MagSafe charger is available directly from Apple, starting at $39 for the 1-meter version.
