After the disastrous debut of GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition, Rockstar makes the originals available for purchase again
Following a disastrous launch plagued with performance issues, gamebreaking bugs and questionable design choices, Rockstar released an official apology for GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition, promising to fix outstanding technical issues and also stating that the original games will be available to purchase once more on the Rockstar Store.
Even prior to release, the GTA Trilogy remasters received criticism because of Rockstar's and Take Two's efforts to crack down on the vibrant GTA III, San Andreas, and Vice City modding communities, shutting down popular graphics and gameplay mods with the threat of DMCA takedown notices. When the games did arrive, they featured a questionable new aesthetic, alongside far more serious issues.
Poor optimization made it harder to run these games than GTA V, and a lack of quality control results in oversights like NPC jerseys with multiple numbers layered on top of each other. All the issues together resulted in the remaster compilation getting a 0.5 user score on Metacritic.
While there's certainly a long way to go before GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition reaches a better level of polish, Rockstar's off to a decent start with major bugfixes incoming in the weeks and months to come.
