The Acer Aspire S7 11.6" is easy on the eyes both in terms of visual appeal and the sharp IPS full HD display. It looks and feels like a luxury notebook, with a hint of James Bond since it's so small and sleek. We love the EL backlighting on the keyboard, though we never quite adjusted to the jarring feel of the keys' short travel.

The Acer Aspire S7-191 is one of the first Windows 8 UltraBooks with a touchscreen, and Full HD at that. The screen is stunning in terms of appearance as well as usability. Acer gets full marks for the sculpted aluminium casing. The performance is top-notch, as you'd expect from a Core i7-powered laptop. The touchscreen takes full advantage of Windows 8's UI. The snappy performance also derives from the two SSDs configured in striped RAID. Multimedia performance is great, with the 1080p IPS screen and loud, distortion-free speakers. Battery life is a negative point; you will probably always have to carry the additional battery along.

If Acer’s previous flagship Aspire S5 Ultrabook was a bit of a disappointment, the S7 more than makes up for it. Sporting glorious Full HD, touch-enabled IPS screens, super-slim profiles, original and striking designs, and even optional battery slices, these Ultrabooks appear to be truly worthy of their flagship status. We can’t wait to get them in for a full review.

12 millimeter bullet. How many notebooks can fit in a height of twelve millimeters? With its high-end ultrabook, Acer presents this question. SSD-Raid, Intel Core-i7 ULV CPU, IPS Full HD touch screen and unibody style - any other questions?

At 11.9mm, the Acer Aspire S7 is incredibly slim and looks fantastic in its crisp, white suit. The addition of the touchscreen means that navigating through Windows 8's big tiles is delightfully simple. Sadly though, its performance, while good, isn't as blazingly fast as you'd hope for considering the high price.

I remember reading Acer’s CEO showing some disappointment when Microsoft reveal their Surface tablet. However, if Acer is capable of building a laptop as beautiful and powerful as the Aspire S7 then there really isn’t much for them to worry about. Aside from the trackpad and the fan noise, the Aspire S7 is the finest Windows 8 based laptop that I have used. The screen is just phenomenally good while the Core i7 and the dual SSDs in RAID0 configuration make the S7 insanely fast to work on.

Acer has produced what we can easily call its most attractive laptop ever with the Aspire S7 13-inch Ultrabook. This incredibly slim and sleek laptop sports a stunning design that combines glass and metal to great effect, without sacrificing power or connectivity. It also offers a glorious 1080p IPS screen with 10-point touch and good speakers, yet can be had for a very reasonable price. Unfortunately, what did get sacrificed to make the Acer Aspire S7 13-inch earn its slimness was battery life. And though the cooling is very effective, it can also get seriously loud. Combined with a keyboard that will take some getting used to, this means the S7 doesn’t take the spot of our favourite Windows 8 Ultrabook as it otherwise might have.

Acer’s S7 is sleek, sexy, and quick. It’s incredible that the company has managed to craft a laptop that performs so well while also keeping the chassis small, light, and attractive. The attention to detail is not on par with design leaders like Apple and Asus, but the broad strokes are as good or better. It’s refreshing to see a unique design.

Ultimately, though, we do wonder whether the traditional Ultrabook design will work against the S7. There are a myriad other products coming out that blur the line between laptop and tablet, and one can’t help but think that these will make for more compelling purchases. After all, if you can use your laptop as a tablet as well, why would you settle for a traditional laptop with touch features?

If you're in the market for a Windows 8 ultrabook and the relatively high price doesn't scare you off then you'll no doubt dig the Acer Aspire S7. With its list of speedy components, amazing display and svelte size, it pretty much is the Windows 8 ultrabook to beat right now.

Thin and light construction, along with a clean design and an excellent touchscreen should make the Aspire S7 a popular choice among users who are after a premium Windows 8 Ultrabook. As if the Acer S7’s seductively slim figure and supremely good looks weren’t enough, this skinny vixen of a portable also boasts an impressive performance acumen. Still, we can acknowledge that this thin a device with this much power is bound to make allowances somewhere. When you toss in the included carrying case, matching white wireless mouse, and expansion dongles, the fetching S7 makes a pretty compelling case for its premium price tag.

That leaves us with a best-in-class laptop with two distinct and important weaknesses. A bad trackpad is a serious knock against any laptop, let alone one that sells for $1650. Mediocre battery life doesn't help. Then again, literally everything else on the S7 is phenomenal. The largest success of the S7 is that it's a statement against the continued commoditization of laptops. It's a precisely designed, engineered and built product that, despite its flaws, has an unmistakable identity supported by what is simply a quality machine. The S7 is proof that there's still plenty of room to grow in terms of design.

We didn't think it would be Acer who would set a new standard for Ultrabook design, but credit where it's due, the Aspire S7 is one of the most stunning laptops we've seen in recent years. Dual-torque hinges, an impossibly-thin body and a Gorilla Glass top combine to create a chassis that's extremely well built and beautiful to behold.

Acer has designed an ultrabook that’s thin, light, attractive, sturdy, and powerful. But it’s not a perfect portable computer. The Acer Aspire S7 is hampered by lousy battery life, an odd keyboard, a high-resolution display that’s both a blessing and a curse (depending on how you use it), and a jet engine-like exhaust fan.

If you’ll pardon my slaughtering of Neil Armstrong’s famous quote from the moon landing, there are two areas I want to focus on for the conclusion. In its definition of what qualifies as an ultrabook laptop, Intel says an ultrabook with a touch screen is allowed to be 2mm thicker than one without. Astonishing: The thinnest and sexiest ultrabook we've seen is a touch-screen showpiece for Windows 8, as speedy as it is convenient and a sure-fire hit for the executive suite. But it's not cheap, and battery life could be better.

With each successive generation, Acer comes closer to building the perfect Ultrabook. Its first model, the S3, had a low-rent feel, with short battery life, trailing performance and a stiff trackpad. The S5 improved on that with a nicer design and blazing speeds, due to a RAID 0 disk setup. But thanks to a low-res screen, among other shortcomings, it ultimately felt overpriced for what it was.

The Acer Aspire S7-391-9886 is a media performance laptop for the traveling artist, similar to the main audience for the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Retina Display) and the current Editors' Choice for ultrabooks, the Asus ZenBook Prime UX32VD-DB71. All three give you 1080p (or greater) resolution in a 13-inch portable package, as well as good multimedia benchmark performance. The S7-391-9886 is certainly the way to go if you want the slimmest possible touch-screen system to commute with you on the train. However, the other choices may be better if you're a plane commuter, since they have better battery life overall. The Asus UX32VD-DB71 in particular comes with discrete graphics and a much less dear price tag of $1,299. Even the other Windows 8 systems with touch screen (Dell XPS 12 and HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4t-1100) have better battery life than the S7-391-9886. Again, if you have $1,700 to spend, you'll probably be happy with the S7-391-9886, but for a little more ($200), you're in upgraded MacBook Pro 13-inch (Retina Display) territory. And that laptop will make it through a continental plane trip with many minutes to spare.

With a killer 1080p touch screen, sexy-as-heck design and blazing SSDs, the Acer Aspire S7 seems poised for greatness. But in a $1,649 ultraportable, we expect at least 5 hours of battery life -- and supplying a little over 4 hours is a real shame. Road warriors will really need to spring for the optional extra-capacity battery to get the most out of this system.

Welcome to the world of tiny high-resolution screens. Acer makes a move into the premium ultrabook market with the introduction of a 11-inch ultrabook with a wonderful 1080p touchscreen that wows. This will be an evaluation of the first attempt by Acer which brings beautiful construction elements to the masses with the Aspire S7-191.

The 11.6-inch model of the Acer Aspire S7 retails for Rs 87,599, which is not too bad all things considered. Remember, we talking about premium Ultrabooks here so ‘value for money’ doesn’t really apply. When compared to its rivals like the Dell XPS 12 and Sony VAIO Duo 11, the S7 is hands down the clear winner. Sure, you can’t use it as a true tablet but this is not a hybrid to begin with so the fact that you’re getting a touchscreen is a bonus. In fact, we feel if Acer had ditched the touchscreen and lowered the price; it would have been even sweeter. Our only gripes with the notebook are the not-so comfortable keyboard and that it gets quite noisy once the fans kick in. If you are shopping for a high-end, lightweight Ultrabook then we highly recommend the Aspire S7.

This machine is Acer’s best effort yet. It’s an Ultrabook that makes the Windows 8 experience an enjoyable one – and on a personal note, it’s the first in many moons that’s made certain Apple-exclusive family members of mine think about trying a switch (having seen it at Thanksgiving, of course). You’ll certainly have to weigh the benefits of having this top-class machine in your position against the amount of cash you’re going to have to dish out since it’s certainly not the most budget-minded beast on the market, but after that, it’s all smooth sailing.

An aesthetically-pleasing and well-designed laptop that doesn’t break the mould too much, but proves there’s still a lot of life in the Ultrabook format. Battery life is a let-down, but otherwise it’s a great competitor to Google’s Chromebook Pixel - and unlike that grand folly it includes an operating system that actually works.

This Ultrabook is definitely one of the best I've used, though the keyboard still leaves some to be desired. It's got the best screen I've seen an Ultrabook equipped with, a 1080p IPS screen. It's a gorgeous screen to look at and should be capable of doing color-sensitive work such as photo editing. If you do need a capable yet portable machine that has an IPS screen, then I think you may have found your match. I would still advise you to find one in a store where you could test out the keyboard for yourself. I can recommend this machine, unlike its smaller brother. It really is a premium machine.

The Acer Aspire S7 sure does win at Windows 8. It's a lovely machine that we're very fond of. But it's the price that costs this Ultrabook scores on the board. Trim it back in line with its competitors and it'd pick up a whole extra star. If price is no object, the S7 scores high, but for the more realistic buyer the price just isn't right, so we can't award a Brucey bonus to this Ultrabook as it stands.

The Acer Aspire S7-191 is an 11-inch Windows 8 Ultrabook laptop that features a 1080p touch screen display, a speedy solid-state drive, a very sleek design and an extended battery. The display is a little dim for our tastes and the battery life without the extended battery is sub-par. This 11-inch Ultrabook looks to take advantage of Windows 8's touch-friendly interface while being as slim and lightweight as possible to make it extremely portable. It definitely is trying to compete with the popular Apple MacBook Air, but the battery life is an issue (at least without the extended battery).

There's no arguing that the $1,199 Acer Aspire S7-191 is one of the sleekest and smallest notebooks we've seen. The aluminum lid and deck look and feel sturdy, and the 11.6-inch 1080p touch screen, while relatively dim, is certainly sharp and responsive. We also like that Acer includes an external battery to get the S7-191 past the 6-hour mark, but getting the endurance you deserve shouldn't require a bulky appendage.

The Acer Aspire S7-191-6640 ($1,199.99) is a road warrior’s ultrabook. It has high-end features like a 128GB SSD, 1080p ten-point touch screen, and weighs less than 2.25 pounds without accessories. The Acer Aspire S7-191-6640 is a road warrior's dream machine. It has full ultrabook power in a system that can actually be used on an airline tray table. In Coach.

And there's the rub: If the Acer Aspire S7-191-6640 had been a few millimeters thicker with a larger capacity battery and the same 2.63 pound weight, it might have given serious competition to the Editors' Choice Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BHI5T. The Asus UX31A-BHI5T has a larger screen and includes a mini-VGA-to-VGA adapter, so it's better suited to corridor dwellers than road warriors, but otherwise the systems are similar in specs, capabilities, and pricing. The S7-191-6640 is just a touch better for the road warrior, but it's not enough for a clear-cut victory.

One of the things that really gets me going about the ACER S7-191-6640 is the price and value offered. At only $999.99 right now you're getting a great piece of hardware. The top shell of the S7-191 is magnesium, inside there is an Intel i5-3317U processor, 4Gb of Ram, and 128Gb of storage in RAID 0! You're getting a lot of bang for your buck with just that. Let's look at the bundle and the value it adds. The ACER S7-191-6640 includes a Bluetooth mouse, RJ45 to USB adapter, mini-HDMI to VGA adapter, and a carrying case! The bundle alone could easily set you back $100 or more, it's just an added bonus. All the previously mentioned features aside, the best feature is by far the touch screen on the ACER S7! My previous experiences with Windows 8 weren't great. Once I was able to play with the ACER S7-191-6640 with a touch screen it's a totally different experience!

Acer has made an impressive thin and light ultrabook with the Aspire S7-191 that even packs in a touchscreen display. Add to this a high resolution display and fast storage system and one would think this would be a top choice. There are lots of sacrifices made by Acer for it though. This includes poor battery life without the extended battery that runs its portability and the screen is very difficult to use outdoors due to limited brightness.

If neither of those items matter to you in a touchscreen ultrabook, then the Acer Aspire S7 would make a fine addition to your arsenal as its light, powerful and has a great-looking 1080p screen. If its battery was better, then we could certainly recommend the S7 easily. As of now, we think you should really put some thought and consideration on what exactly you want out of the S7 before you decide to throw $1,400 at a retailer for the ultrabook.

3317U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.7 - 2.6 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
3337U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q1 2013. Offers a core clock of 1.8 - 2.7 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1100 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3517U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 3.0 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
13.3: This is a common display format for subnotebooks. Netbooks, UMPC and some subnotebooks have tinier displays. Nevertheless, the majority of standard laptops has a higher format. The advantage of a small display is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.
