WhatsApp is one step closer to figuring out multi-device support

It is still impossible to use WhatsApp on multiple smartphones simultaneously. While one can technically use it on a phone and desktop/browser at the same time, it requires the smartphone to be connected to the internet at all times. That could change soon, as WhatsApp is now a step closer to rolling out multi-device support.

Wabetainfo stumbled upon the feature in a beta version of WhatsApp for Android. We get to see a prompt that says, "Syncing with WhatsApp on another device," suggesting that it will be possible to run the app on multiple devices. The 'manage' button could let users determine the content that needs to be synced. Wabetainfo adds that deleted messages will not be synced across devices in both personal and group chats. One may have to manually delete a message from all devices to scrub it off the app entirely.

WhatsApp's persistent use of end-to-end encryption could prove to be the biggest hurdle towards the goal of multi-device support. Syncing media could be tricky, too. Different platforms add another layer of complexity to the equation. However, WhatsApp might let users pick one could service (Google Drive/iCloud) for backups as a workaround. Multi-device support has been in the works for over a year. Therefore, we can reasonably assume that WhatsApp may have run into several snags along the way.
