Samsung and LG could add rear screens on future smartphones

OEMs like Nubia and Yotaphone already introduced rear displays for smartphones, even though these are only e-ink screens that do not have full color capabilities. However, the first full color rear displays could be coming soon to Samsung and LG handhelds, if we are to judge from the latest approved patents.

According to the patents filed at the American patent office uncovered by Dutch site Mobielkopen, the rear displays will have different display form factors depending on OEM implementation. Samsung’s patent presents a rear display that is roughly half the size of the main front display, while LG’s patent would allow for a smaller screen placed above the rear camera.

Further analyzing the blueprints, Samsung’s dual-screen phone appears to be thinner, with almost no side and bottom bezels on the front, and the lack of a fingerprint scanner may suggest that the phone will rely on in-screen sensors or face recognition tech. The LG model, on the other hand, seems a bit bulkier from the side, with more pronounced bezels.

Considering that Samsung is already planning to release a foldable phone that practically features a dual screen setup when folded, these newly revealed rear screen patents may be integrated on entry-level and mid-range smartphone models, leaving the flexible OLED displays for the flagships.
