Zoom has unveiled the Instamic Pro Plus C, a petite 32-bit float audio recorder designed for discrete wear on clothing and mounting on vehicles. The recorder measures 1.5 x 1 x 0.5 inches (3.8 x 2.5 x 1.3 cm) and weighs 0.63 ounce (18 g). It has been used by the sound designer of Fortnite to record vehicle Foley sound effects.
The Instamic Pro Plus C audio recorder comes in two models—a stereo and a mono model. Both have identical specifications except the stereo model uses a four-mic MEMS array with two lateral mics, while the mono model uses only a four-mic MEMS array.
The MEMS microphones reportedly deliver audio across a frequency range of 40 Hz to 20 kHz, with a maximum sound pressure level of 135 dB. A very high SPL coupled with 32-bit float, 96 kHz WAV recordings to 16 GB of internal memory enables clip-free recordings, according to Zoom. For use on a professional film set, the Instamic supports timecode sync with a clock accuracy of 2.5 ppm.
Users can control up to 10 Instamic Pro Plus C recorders using the Instamic Remote app, which can also control the power, equalization, and timecode sync settings. The battery has a runtime of up to 4.5 hours and recharges in 1.15 hours, says the company. With an IP67 rating, the recorder can be submerged for up to half an hour in water up to 3.3 feet (1 m) deep.
The recorder comes with three mounting options and can be used as a Bluetooth microphone with compatible smartphone apps as well as a variety of GoPro, Garmin, and Insta360 action cameras.
The Zoom Instamic Pro Plus C audio recorder is available now at an MSRP of $199 (stereo model) or $179 (mono model).
