YouTube view counts change today: one frame is now a view

YouTube changed the rules today. A view is now counted the moment playback begins, from the very first frame. Long-form videos used to need a stretch of watch time before the public counter moved. That threshold is gone.
The company announced the switch on 17 August and puts a hard date in its help pages: "Beginning August 24, 2026, views are counted the moment a video starts to play across all formats, including Shorts, long-form videos (VOD), and live streams." The change applies globally.
Why your numbers are about to look bigger
YouTube ran several counting systems side by side until now. Shorts have counted from the first frame since March 2025, while long-form kept a minimum watch time. YouTube never published how long that was. The industry worked with a rule of thumb of roughly 30 seconds.
With the systems aligned, that hurdle disappears. Open a video, bounce after two seconds, and the counter still moves. For channels that means the public number grows faster without a single extra person watching. YouTube expects as much and tells creators they will likely see their total view counts increase faster. There is no mention of older videos being recalculated, the new rule applies to playbacks from today.
The honest number is called engaged views
The stricter metric has not disappeared. It is now called engaged views and sits in YouTube Analytics under Advanced Mode, where you can see how many viewers stayed after pressing play.
Anyone judging a channel's reach should look there from now on rather than at the counter below the video. For advertisers and sponsors the burden of proof shifts with it. The public figure becomes a reach number, not an attention number.
Your payout does not change
Money still follows the strict metrics. The help page states: "YPP earnings will still be based on 'engaged views' and 'engaged watch hours'. YPP eligibility will still be based on 'qualified views.'" Only the labels moved. What used to be valid public Shorts views and valid public watch hours are now qualified Shorts views and qualified watch hours.
A different change matters far more for the bank account. From 2027 YouTube raises the entry bar to its Partner Program sharply, to 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views.
What YouTube still refuses to count
The checks on real viewers stay in place. YouTube discards low-quality playbacks and names watching the same video on several devices or streaming it across several windows and tabs as examples. The counter can also slow down or freeze while the system verifies the figures. Anyone hoping views can now be inflated at will is out of luck.
