Xiaomi reveals prototype smartphone with single mechanical telescopic camera and plans to take over Europe with the help of 5,000 new engineers
There’s no surprise how ambitious Xiaomi is, with the company recently becoming the third-largest smartphone supplier in the world. New revelations at MIDC 2020 have confirmed there are big plans ahead, and one of these plans may have been shown back in July, when we reported about a Xiaomi patent for a transparent 5G smartphone that featured a single 108 MP mechanical zoom lens on its rear. Xiaomi has now posted a video of a prototype device that sports a similar single retractable lens on the back.
According to Xiaomi executives, this independently developed camera technology allows for a 300% increase of the amount of light that is taken in and affords a 20% increase in clarity. New stabilization technology is also present, giving the user the opportunity to avoid producing shaky images when taking macro shots or “infinity” level photographs. The way the software is shown to be implemented (see video below) makes using the mechanical telescopic camera very straightforward, with a simple slide of the finger deciding on the required amount of zoom.
Xiaomi has also declared that there are plans to hire 5,000 new engineers to join the army of 10,000 personnel the company already has on the books for research and development. It appears there are intentions for Xiaomi to be at the head of the smartphone competition for the key Europe market within a few years, and possibly even challenge Samsung’s global appeal in the not too distant future, at the expense of fellow Chinese OEM Huawei.
