Xiaomi Comet prototype smartphone proves that Xiaomi has dabbled with IP68 waterproofing before
Images of an engineering prototype smartphone called the Xiaomi Comet have been published, and they show every side of the peculiar device. The design language is vaguely reminiscent of the Black Shark 3, which is also made by Xiaomi. The Comet is powered by a Snapdragon 710, and it has 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage, so it’s not exactly a flagship or a flagship-killer smartphone.
Interestingly enough, the Xiaomi Comet has IP68 certification, which somewhat flies in the face of recent comments made by Redmi boss Lu Weibing, who stated that IP53 was more than enough even for flagships like the Redmi K30 Pro smartphone. The Comet device proves that Xiaomi has considered IP68 protection before, and it is more than likely the popular Chinese OEM will offer more smartphones in the future with the higher protection rating.
From the front, the Xiaomi Comet is rather mundane looking, but it does sport a bright red power button on the side. However, on the rear the overall look does suggest it could have been planned as a budget gaming phone, as has been speculated. The Comet has a 12 MP main camera and a 2 MP selfie camera, a 2,900-mAh battery, and it’s not going to be in the Mi store anytime soon. It may not be beautiful or powerful, but at least the Xiaomi Comet has an IP68 rating against dust and water ingress.
