X Crop has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Nitter, the open-source project behind XCancel. The project has now suspended the service while it looks into its legal options.

If you're trying to access XCancel today and can't get the website to load, you're not alone. The issue isn't on your end. Instead, XCancel has been taken down after X Corp sent a cease-and-desist letter to Nitter, the open-source project behind the service.

Nitter allows users to view X posts without directly opening the X website or signing into an X account. XCancel is one of the services built around Nitter, giving users an alternative way to browse public X content.

The takedown was confirmed through a message that now appears when users try to access XCancel. According to the message, Nitter received a letter from X Corp on August 24 at 8 PM EST, asking it to stop operating XCancel. The project has now suspended the service while it looks into its legal options.

TechCrunch also reviewed the letter sent by X's lawyers. According to the report, X accuses Nitter of the unlawful use and circumvention of its API and related data. The company claims it has evidence that Nitter scraped information from X and accessed X accounts and session tokens in ways that violated its rules. X's lawyers argue that these actions violate various state and federal laws.

For now, XCancel remains offline, and Nitter has not provided any information about when the service could return.
