The developer has yet to get their hands on even a single Switch 2 developer kit, citing shortages and a large backlog which requesting assistance from anyone who can help them procure one.

Warframe fans looking forward to playing an enhanced edition on the Switch 2 will have to wait, as Digital Extremes has yet to secure a development kit from Nintendo, pretty much stalling progress on a port the developers are excited about.

Despite the Nintendo Switch 2 launching on June 5, Digital Extremes hasn’t received a Nintendo Switch 2 devkit amid a backlog. The news broke during a press Q&A session with Eurogamer, where CEO Steve Sinclair poured out the team’s excitement for the possibility of a Nintendo Switch 2 port for Warframe. In the session, Sinclair stated:

“Our tech team is so excited to take advantage of the cool high-speed cores and the other really cool features of it (Switch 2). There’s just such a backlog of dev kits. So, if you know anyone… just one, that's all it would take.”

Digital Extremes could bring some quality-of-life updates with an enhanced version of Warframe for the Nintendo Switch 2. Users could expect revamped graphics, Joy-Con mouse functionality, and faster load times, beyond the technical capabilities of the Switch 1 version.

Owners can still play Warframe on the Nintendo Switch 2 via backwards compatibility through the Switch 1 port. Although players are reporting a slew of crashes and errors when trying to boot the game. It’s a problem Digital Extremes is still investigating.

Digital Extremes isn’t the only studio that is yet to receive a Switch 2 devkit, as other developer teams are on a waitlist. Among these studios are Ant Workshop and Fellow Traveller Games, which could be due to devkit production constraints.

While some studios eagerly await their turn, larger studios have been given early access. As third-party studios, CD Projekt Red released Cyberpunk 2077 as a day-one third-party title, and FromSoftware is set to release Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition sometime in 2025.

On the flipside, Warframe’s devs are still committed to releasing a Switch 2 port as soon as possible, with Sinclair reassuring, “Oh, I can’t wait. We definitely have plans. When we get a dev kit, we'll be doing a custom build for Warframe. Absolutely.”

Warframe has spanned across all major platforms, including PS5, Xbox Series S|X, PC, iOS, alongside an Android port slated for fall 2025. Moreover, Warframe is set to receive a new story chapter, dubbed “The Old Peace,” which will continue the game’s Void story arc toward the “Tau” update, scheduled for 2026. Till then, Switch 2 owners will have to wait for a native port until Digital Extreme’s devkit bottleneck clears up.
