Valve has ended Valve Index production. Remaining headsets, controllers, and accessories are 20% off on Steam while supplies last, and support continues for owners.

Valve has officially ended production of the Valve Index. In a Steam Hardware announcement titled "Valve Index Sunset," the company says the headset is no longer being produced and that remaining headsets, controllers, and accessories are available at reduced prices while supplies last. The same notice appears on the Valve Index store page.

Steam listings now show the Valve Index headset at $399.20 in the US, down from $499. The replacement left controller is $119.20 instead of $149, and the replacement tether is $103.20 instead of $129, which makes each item 20% off. Valve’s announcement says only that remaining stock is available at the new prices while supplies last. The Steam Hardware Updates account says these three products are the only ones on offer and that the Index will leave Steam once they sell out. Valve has not given a deadline, and availability may differ by region.

Valve Index owners keep their support

Valve says nothing changes for current owners, and the Valve Index remains supported on Steam and SteamVR. The announcement does not spell out firmware or driver updates or how long replacement parts will stay available, so owners should not read more into it than that.

Production stopped long before the notice

The formal sunset is the last step in a longer exit. Valve designer Lawrence Yang told third-party media in November 2025 that the company was no longer manufacturing the Valve Index, the same week Valve unveiled the Steam Frame. Yang also said Valve is not working on Lighthouse support for the new headset.

The Valve Index launched in June 2019 with dual 1440x1600 RGB LCDs and refresh rates of 80, 90, 120, and 144Hz, with the 144Hz mode marked as experimental. It was tracked by external SteamVR Base Station 2.0 units and connected to a PC by cable.

Steam Frame takes over

The Steam Frame is a standalone headset that can also stream games from a PC. According to Valve's developer documentation, it uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip with 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, inside-out camera tracking, and 2160x2160 LCD panels per eye. It went on sale on September 18, 2026.

For anyone who still wants a Valve Index, the headset alone is not enough. It needs base stations and controllers, and Valve is not offering those in this clearance.
