Ubiquiti has just announced Unifi OS Server, which can be installed on your own hardware and is primarily aimed at managed service providers who want to self-host the full UniFi Network stack on their own server hardware while still having access to UniFI’s cloud connectivity.
In doing so, users can set up a configuration for the server that meets their own needs instead of relying on Ubiquiti hardware. The Unifi OS Server can be installed on virtual machines as well as directly on systems based on X86, X64 or ARM64 architecture.
An internet connection is not necessary to use the software, as Ubiquiti highlights. There will also be no license management, keeping the company true to its roots. Using a licensing solution would certainly have been an option, but Ubiquiti intends to continue earning money from the hardware connected to the Unifi OS server.
The new approach is therefore intended to tap into new customer groups. However, the approach is not entirely new. Even in the early days, it was possible to install the WLAN controller on your own hardware for WLAN installations, thereby saving a lot of money by using inexpensive hardware.
