Ubiquiti has officially introduced the UniFi 5G Max, which is a new 5G modem that can be easily integrated into a UniFi network. Thanks to PoE support, the device can be connected directly to a PoE switch without a power outlet nearby. The RJ45 network port supports 2.5GbE.
For cellular connections, the modem has two physical nano SIM slots, but also supports eSIM profiles. The Ubiquiti UniFi 5G Max further supports the so-called Dual SIM Single Standby (DSSS) mode, which means one SIM can be used as a backup if the other network goes down. Users can even combine a physical SIM and an eSIM, as an alternative to two physical SIM cards.
Using an eSIM requires a manual activation code, QR codes cannot be used for that. For users based in the US, there might also a small issue with T-Mobile. According to Ubiquiti, customers should inform customer support that the supposed incompatibility does not exist, as Ubiquiti states that it is a database error on T-Mobile’s side. Installing eSIMs on smartphones is pretty common these days, but this is still a relatively rare feature for routers. As a result, network operators and providers may not have much experience with this setup.
Either way, download speeds are expected to reach up to 3.4 Gbps, while uplink speeds can hit around 560 Mbps. These values apply to non-standalone networks. In standalone networks, download performance is cut in half, but upload increases to 650 Mbps. A small status display shows some information about the network connection. Moreover, the Ubiquiti UniFi 5G Max supports fallback to 4G/LTE or even 3G/UMTS, and the full list of supported frequency bands can be found in the spec sheet. That said, the UniFi 5G Max requires a UniFi cloud gateway.
There is also a rugged version of the device called the UniFi 5G Max Outdoor. This model variant has an IP67 rating and it is intended to provide better reception in more demanding environments, such as when the modem is hooked up to a cellular tower on a rooftop. Ubiquiti also suggests that the 5G modem can be used on a vehicle.
Ubiquiti’s official MSRP For the UniFi 5G Max stands at $399. The outdoor version is scheduled to hit the market in January 2026 and costs $459. Both are already listed at the brand's official online store.
