Uber drivers can get $20,300 to buy Tesla Model Y plus Supercharger allowance in California

After introducing a $3,500 state rebate for the purchase of electric vehicles, bringing the price of a Tesla Model Y below $40,000, California has now started a much more generous EV incentive program, this time for rideshare vehicles.

Uber, Lyft, and other rideshare platform drivers who meet certain income and trip number criteria will receive up to $20,300 towards the purchase of a new Model Y or other electric car.

Uber driver EV purchase rebate conditions

California regulators have approved a new incentive scheme aimed squarely at the people who rack up the most miles on the state's roads. These are full-time Uber, Lyft, and HopSkipDrive drivers, or the so-called Transportation Network Company (TNC) in regulatory parlance. The new California Public Utilities Commission's Drivers Assistance Program is branded RIDE, for Rideshare Incentives for Driving Electric, and is part of the broader Clean Miles Standard effort to push transportation network companies toward zero emission fleets.

Eligible low- to moderate-income drivers can get up to $20,300 toward a new EV, or $14,200 for a used one, plus as much as $1,170 a year to soften charging costs at Tesla Superchargers or another network. That dwarfs most of what's currently on the table in California. MyFirstEV, the state's newer instant rebate for first-time EV buyers, tops out at $3,500. Clean Cars 4 All, the state's income-based vehicle replacement program, caps at $13,500 and requires scrapping an older car. Since the federal EV tax credit expired on October 1, 2025, RIDE is arguably the biggest single EV subsidy left standing.

RIDE targets drivers logging high ride volumes of at least 4,500 TNC trips with passengers in the last 12 months, and household income limits at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level apply. The Center for Sustainable Energy will administer applications, offering multilingual support and cost comparison tools once the online portal goes live. 

Unlike CVRP, California's old blanket EV rebate that shut its doors in 2023, and subsequent iterations, RIDE is rather narrow. It comes into force because rideshare vehicles log outsized mileage and, by extension, pollute more. Whether it moves the needle on driver adoption will depend on how many meet the volume and income bar and how fast the funding, pulled from individual TNC fees charged every ride, holds up once applications open.
