Tesla has nixed the zero interest rate APR financing deal for the Model Y, and the rate keeps on climbing. After delivering a record number of vehicles in Q3 at abysmal margins, it is now trying to restore the profitability angle.

Tesla has bumped the Model Y's promotional APR from 0.99% to 1.49% as of September 3, the second increase in as many months on a financing deal that was sitting at 0% just a few weeks back.

The new rate applies to the base RWD, AWD, and the Premium trims, with the Performance version staying at its separate 3.99% APR, a gap Tesla has kept in place consistently enough to look like a deliberate demand lever rather than an oversight.

The rate has been on a bumpy ride all year. Tesla introduced 0% APR financing on the Model Y RWD in December 2025, then extended it to the AWD trim in February, even stretching a discount to the usually excluded Performance variant at one point. That aggressive stacking of incentives came as Tesla tried to prop up quarterly delivery numbers after the federal EV tax credit ended early under the Trump administration, hitting sales in the US on top of existing declines in China and Europe.

Tesla paired the 0% financing with inventory discounts, free option upgrades, and at times sharply higher lease pricing to push buyers toward purchasing outright. In August, however, after an abysmal earnings report, the zero interest rate Model Y deal disappeared and was replaced with 0.99% to soothe investor worries. Financing loans at 0% isn't free for Tesla, since the company effectively eats the interest itself, so unwinding the promo lines up with an effort to protect margins once the incentive had done its intended job of pulling sales forward.

On a $45,000 Model Y financed over 72 months, the jump from 0.99% to 1.49% adds roughly $11 to $12 a month, but that is about $800 in extra interest over the loan's duration, so a small hit on the Model Y monthly payment stacks on top of the earlier move away from 0% APR financing. Tesla is reporting earnings next month, and if it has managed to steady the margin decline, the Model Y interest rate could start drifting down again to pad the sales in the all-important holiday quarter, if history is any indication.
