Carbon Copy. Toshiba's new Tecra X40-D is the Japanese manufacturer's latest entry in the thin-and-light business market and carries over several features from its smaller brother, the Portégé X30. Is the X40 able to differentiate itself enough, or is it more of the same in a larger package?

The entry-level configuration of the Tecra X40-D (SKU D1452), on sale for $1,189 as we were typing this, is very well-priced. Even at its non-sale price of $1,349, competing models from Dell and Lenovo were still several hundred more for a similar component loadout. The Tecra X40-D comes standard with a three-year international limited warranty, too. Bottom line, if you can live with around nine hours of battery life instead of the double-digit numbers offered by the competition, the Tecra X40-D is a good value if you pick the component upgrades with care, and worthy of consideration.

Whether you're paying its starting price of $1,129 or the $2,040 that our test unit costs, you should expect a better business laptop than this. The Tecra X40-D suffers from short battery life, an uncomfortable keyboard and a dim display. It has some good performance and a small dose of style, but those strengths aren't enough to overcome its massive shortcomings.

Toshiba Tecra X40-D-10G

The Toshiba Tecra X40-D-10G offers good computing power in a relatively lightweight, travel-friendly format. The Tecra X40-D is a conventional-looking laptop with little in the way of newfangled design features. So, for example, the screen does not rotate but pushes back to a traditional stopping angle of about 157 degrees. The lid is a slate-gray expanse with a barely discernible linear marking and the Toshiba logo discreetly placed in one corner. Open up and there is more gray, and just a couple of slivers of silver. One is around the power button that sits top right of the keyboard and another frames the bottom of the touchpad. The lid has a fair amount of flex, so a protective sleeve is likely to be required when traveling. However, Toshiba says the Tecra X40 meets MIL STD 810G, with its magnesium chassis incorporating a honeycomb design that adds to its physical strength. Toshiba has kept the weight of the Tecra X40-D down to 1.25 kg. The size is reasonable too. The Tecra X40-D measures 332 x 228.9 x 16.9 mm. The screen has a completely matte finish and is a joy to work with for the most part, although horizontal viewing angles, top brightness, and vibrancy could all improve. The laptop has a touchscreen with Full-HD resolution at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. This resolution is categorized at the mid-range model of the Tecra X40 series. Under the hood, the Toshiba Tecra X40-D-10G is powered by an Intel Core i5-7200U processor, an Intel HD Graphics 620 graphic processor, 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. Toshiba uses a new hybrid air cooling system in the Tecra X40. This has two inlets to pull air in. When the fan activated, twin vents located at the back edge of the base push out a fair amount of hot air. The backlit keyboard is a pleasure to use because it is bouncy and responsive with large, clearly marked keys. Toshiba's characteristic AccuPoint stick sits between the G, H, and B keys and can be used with a pair of extra buttons under the narrow space bar. There are plenty of security features to keep business users happy, including an IR-based camera for facial recognition via Windows Hello, a fingerprint reader built into the wrist rest, and a smart card slot. There is a good selection of ports and connectors. For a long time, Toshiba even included a legacy VGA connector in its business laptops, but this has now disappeared in favor of thinness. However, the system's twin USB-C ports support a VGA adapter. There are also a full-size HDMI port, USB 3.0 ports, and a 3.5 mm headset jack. Both of the USB-C ports can be used to charge the Tecra X40, and the presence of a MicroSD card slot is another welcome feature. Moreover, the Harman Kardon speakers deliver pretty good quality sound. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

There's nothing innovative or showy about Toshiba's Tecra X40-D. Instead we have a capable, well-featured laptop that's light enough to tote around. The keyboard is a pleasure to use and the matte screen is easy on the eye. The copious security features will please corporate buyers, and the battery should -- just about -- get mobile professionals through a day's work when called upon to do so.

Toshiba Tecra X40-E First Take: Better battery life boosts mobile credentials
Source: Zdnet.com English Archive.org version
Overall this is a nice workhorse laptop, aimed more at knowledge workers than media creators. It has a great keyboard and good battery life, so it should suit mobile professionals. The touch screen is useful, but it's a shame the lid is rather flexible.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

69.61%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
