Super Thin, Light and Mobile? "Even more mobile, more elegant and considerably more efficient than any other notebook" - so much to the comparatives with which Toshiba promotes the T130 on its homepage. This laptop can't be placed into the category of notebooks already just because of its 13.3 inch size and thus actually participates in the subnotebook league. The built-in Intel Pentium SU4100 processor, a four gigabyte DDR3 RAM and the Intel GMA 4500 graphic chip set promise more than only "netbook power". In the best case, there should also be enough mobility supplied with a announced battery life of up to 10 hours. The following review shows how the Satellite T130 sustains in practice.

The Toshiba Portege T130 offers a slim design, long battery life and ample storage space so you never have to erase. At a premium price of RM3,699, we expected to get an optical drive in the Portege T130. If you need one, you’ll have to fork out extra money on an external drive. Plus that just adds more clutter. Apart from that glaring omission, however, you certainly get what you pay for. The combination of long battery life and a lightweight design is perfect for those constantly on the go.

Not the most exciting CULV laptop but offers portability and a great battery life Designed to offer good portability and everyday performance, the Toshiba Satellite T130-12N is a comfortable machine that delivers on most of its promises and could prove a great choice for those seeking an ultraportable for working on the move. It may not be the most exciting laptop around, but the solid design and great battery life make the Satellite T130-12N a good option for the regular traveller. If you're looking for more in terms of power, though, it's probably worth taking a look at the MSI X600.

Despite the hype sometimes a netbook just won't hack it. Lucky then, there's a new kid in town - the CULV notebook. Ergonomically, it is an improvement over a netbook, and we appreciate the lengthy battery life, but the unresponsive mouse buttons and a lack of raw speed blunt it's appeal a little. We'd recommend going for the Satellite Pro version, with its faster processor and Windows 7 Professional.

The Intel ULV-powered ultraportables we’ve seen over the last few months have been a bit of a mixed bag. Some, like the Samsung X120, have successfully exploited the thin-and-light idea to offer something new, while others, like the Advent Altro, seem to have missed the point completely. This particular Toshiba T130 model isn’t a bad deal if you need a big screen, long battery life and a finger-friendly keyboard, but it just didn’t dazzle us and there are other ULV ultraportables we like more for this amount of money.

While the chassis, keyboard and general feature set of the T130-11H are just fine, it's let down by a lackadaisical single-core processor that doesn't offer anything close to acceptable performance. Provided you can afford a bit more, we'd seriously recommend opting for one of the more expensive dual-core models.

Toshiba's laptops aren't usually the trendiest machines on the market, but, with the Satellite T130, the company could have a catwalk favourite on its hands. The configuration of the Toshiba Satellite T130 that we were supplied with, the T130-13M, is the tortoise of the laptop world. While its hare-like rivals zoom around willy-nilly, it takes a more considered approach. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though, because it's one of very few laptops that'll still have enough battery power left to send that all-important email at the end of the day

Running Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) you’ll find a fair amount of bloatware included, with the Start menu littered with internet shortcuts you’ll probably want to delete as soon as it arrives. McAfee’s Security Center is in place as is a trial of Microsoft Office. Toshiba has included a number of utilities that (aside from the novelty value of the Eco Utility) you’ll probably ignore. With no optical drive, however, you’ll be left to download or connect an external device for further installations.

The Toshiba Satellite T130 is available in various versions with components offering varying performance levels. Slim, light and with good battery life, the T130 makes a good first impression. Unfortunately, the touchpad and screen aren’t up to standard, which compromises the overall comfort of use. This is nevertheless a well-put together laptop with enough under the bonnet for office work.

A nippy dual-core processor and outstanding battery life ensures the Toshiba Satellite Pro T130-15F ticks many boxes for prospective buyers. It still has some issues, though, so shouldn't shoot to the top of your list unless it comes down in price.

Both are part of the company's "thin, light and mobile" line-up, but while the T110 - reviewed here - is an 11.6in laptop that likes look down on netbooks, its bigger sibling is a 13.3in notebook that promises to be more fleet of foot than more mainstream machines. If not having an optical drive is a killer, you can forget this machine, but if you're after a long-running laptop that delivers a decent mainstream computing performance but doesn't restrict you to a netbook-size screen, it's well worth a look.

The Toshiba Satellite T130-13Q is a very nice-looking laptop. It's beautifully and solidly constructed, offers the same pixel resolution as its larger-screened competitors and delivers by far the best battery performance. Unfortunately, you'll have to sacrifice an optical drive, a fair deal of speed – and a reasonable amount of cash too as it's also – along with the Samsung – at the very top of this sub-£500 category.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.
SU4100: Entry-level dual core processor for slim and light subnotebooks. Due to the Pentium name, the CPU may have less power saving features than Core 2 Duo processors.
Intel Core 2 Solo:
SU3500: Power efficient single core processor for small subnotebooks that is based on the Penryn core and includes all features (like Virtualization, C6 state, ...). The performance should be comparable with a 1.7 GHz Athlon II Neo K125.
Intel Pentium:
SU2700: Entry level Single Core CPU with less power saving states as the Core line and because of the slow clock rate (1.3 GHz) not very fast. Directly soldered to the mainboard and therefore for thin and light laptops (CULV class).
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
SU7300: Slow clocked dual core processor with a low TDP of 10 Watt.

72.77%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
