Looking for a desktop replacement notebook for less than a grand? The Toshiba Satellite S55t-A5277 offers category leading performance and a healthy feature set, but the ho-hum design and short battery life keep it from ranking higher.

The Toshiba Satellite S55t-A5277 may not be as portable as we'd like--it's a little bulky, and the battery life is on the shorter side--but the overall performance leads the competition, making it hard to ignore. The design is a bit drab, and the 720p display left us wanting more, but it does offer a decent set of features, making the Toshiba Satellite S55t-A5277 worth a good look from anybody in the market for a desktop replacement.

The $989 Toshiba Satellite S55t-A5277 is a gorgeous powerhouse of a laptop that can not only handle your most intense class work, but also lets you blow off steam with some of the hottest PC games. Unfortunately, its dim, low-resolution display belies its high price, while its anemic battery life makes it less than portable.

Toshiba Satellite S50-A-10H

The Toshiba Satellite S50-A-10H is an all-round machine built for performance in a compact and portable 15.6 inch body. Due to a mix of plastic and aluminum, the construction is also sturdy with a small amount of flex in some areas. It is a good looking sleek device with a nice backlit keyboard, which is comfortable to use for prolonged periods. The touchpad is responsive and pleasant to use. It sports an impressive Core i7-4700MQ fourth generation Haswell quad core processor with a clock rate of 2.4 GHz and both Intel's HD Graphics 4600 graphics unit and Nvidia's GeForce GT 740M. The Nvidia only kicks in when graphically demanding tasks are running. So, even demanding games can be played on this machine, albeit at medium settings.

The matte 15.6 inch screen with a disappointing resolution of 1366x768 is the biggest disadvantage of the Toshiba S50-A-10H. Brightness and contrast leave much to be desired, which makes it difficult to use outdoors or in very bright environments. The viewing angles are rather dismal. Considering the performance, the screen is not suitable. But, the battery life (4 hours during light web browsing) is decent for a device with that much performance. While the Toshiba Satellite S50-A-10H delivers plenty of performance for most tasks, the screen perform most tasks, the screen is disappointing. There are much better options available for this price range.

Compact all-rounder. The Satellite S50 wants to be a high-performance all-round laptop for home usage. Toshiba installs a Haswell processor and a GeForce GPU in the laptop and completes the bundle with a high-capacity hard drive. Whether the computer is compelling is revealed in our test report.

Toshiba Satellite S50t-A-118

The Toshiba Satellite S50t-A-118 is mid-range model. It is not high-end, yet also not bad. The potentially confusing thing about this particular model is that its specs are virtually identical to the higher-end range, with only a few small exceptions. The price is lower for one. Partly to blame is the 1366x786 resolution touchscreen. The 15 inch touchscreen is responsive, but the colors are a blurry and disappointing. But on a positive note, despite packing 10GB less RAM than the higher end model, it still manages to perform just as well. The Intel i7 4700MQ 2.4GHZ quad core CPU just blazes through most tasks, and with the GeForce GT740M Graphics it can handle demanding games at surprisingly high settings. The full sized keyboard is laid out well, though the touchpad is a little hit and miss at times.

The Toshiba Satellite S50t-A-118 was not built to look impressive, despite its performance capabilities. The design is simple, and does not really catch the eye. Weighing in at 2.6 kg, this 15 inch machine is not the most portable laptop around. Its battery life is extremely disappointing as well, all of which makes the Toshiba Satellite S50t-A-118 seem more like a desktop replacement than anything else. Overall, the power of this device is impressive, especially at this price. If display quality or battery life is not a priority, this device would seem like a great choice.

At first glance, the Toshiba Satellite S50-AST3GX1 seems like a very capable systems thanks to its i7 quad core processor and GeForce GT 740M graphics. In fact, it does do very well for general purpose applications. There are two major areas of concern for the system though. This includes a very subpar screen for its class with a lower resolution and poor viewing angles.

60% Can quality components make up for this laptop's shortcomings?

The Toshiba has its issues, then, but none of them are deal breakers if you're searching for a budget laptop – rather, they're things that just have to be accepted. If you want a system for general computing and light gaming and you'd rather concentrate on processing power, it's an ideal buy thanks to the combination of an AMD APU and discrete graphics core. If screen quality or battery life are more important, though, look elsewhere.

The Toshiba Satellite S50T-B-10H is a well-specified and attractive laptop. Its processor and graphics performance mean it should be a bargain at this price, but build quality issues and a poor screen ultimately make this is a so-so laptop. The Acer Aspire V3-772G is a better alternative, as it combines an impressively powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 750M graphics processor with a more powerful Intel Core i7-4702MQ processor. It’s more expensive than the Toshiba Satellite S50T-B-10H, but it’s one of our favourite general-purpose laptops.

Don't let the good looks fool you. This Toshiba Satellite P50t-B has a poor screen and just isn't great value considering the $1500 price point at which it's offered. For the asking price, it could use a Full HD panel, as well as better storage. It's got a good keyboard, though, and we like that it's a slim and relatively lightweight unit, despite its 15.6in form factor. But we can't get over the screen.

Beauty isn't everything. Toshiba's Satellite S50-B-12U features a classy aluminum design. The thin, lightweight notebook is available for 700 Euros (~$846), including a dedicated AMD graphics card. But appearance doesn't make the man -- or the notebook -- so is there more hidden within that beautiful exterior? Our review reveals the answer.

Toshiba Satellite S50-B-12Z

High processing power with maximum portability is what best describes the Satellite S50. The design is sleek and smooth with a brush metallic finish, suitable for the most stylish and modern user. It is powered by a fourth generation Intel i7 processor that clocks up to 3.1 GHz coupled with 8 GB RAM. This is enough for highly demanding activities such as HD video editing or picture touch up. The processor comes with an AMD Radeon R7 M260 graphic card with up to 2 GB VRAM. There is also a 1TB hard drive that can store a large amount of data, especially videos and high-end graphics. The glossy 15.6 inch LED display features FHD resolution and uses the TruBrite technology. The resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels will surely cater the most graphically demanding tasks. As an additional treat, Toshiba has thrown in a full set of Harman Kardon speakers with DTS surround sound for that added oomph when watching your favorite videos. This entire laptop is extremely portable since it weighs only 2.24 kg and is 24 mm thick. The black keypad has a backlight and is so vast that it includes a numerical pad on the right hand side. Truly this laptop is a graphic powerhouse for people on the go.

Overall, we're happy with the Toshiba Satellite S50-B-14P. The Full HD screen is well worth the price of swapping out the i7 processor for the i5, although some may be upset by the lack of high capacity storage. Our main gripe with this laptop is build quality, which we feel should be much better at this price. There's no excuse for gaps between panels and loose pieces of plastic, especially in a laptop that's inevitably going to be taken out and about. At this price, the Asus N551JK is a better choice, although it is heavier.

The configuration includes a 1.7GHz Intel Core i5-4210U processor (up to 2.7GHz in boost mode), 4GB of system memory (one memory slot is free, and up to 16GB upgrade is supported), AMD Radeon R9 M260 graphics with 2GB of dedicated memory, as well as classic 750GB SATA hard disk. There is also a modern WiFi adapter that supports 802.11ac standard and Bluetooth 4.0 support, which is rarely seen in models of this category. The built-in 4-cell battery provides approximately 3.5-4hrs of average use. Performance is good for multimedia and games; however, this is a model of the middle class. For everyday office work and home users, this laptop is a good choice while the compact dimensions is making this model ideal for those who often have to carry around their machine.
Positive: Elegant design; for a 15.6 "model, very compact size and light weight; good performance; solid autonomy. Negative: No optical drive.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

65.53%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
