If you were to look for the definition of "perfectly average laptop," you'd probably find a picture of the Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030. The Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030 is a decent all-around budget laptop. However, with its short battery life and cheaper options available from the competition, it's not an overly impressive deal.

The Toshiba Satellite M645 is an impressive 14-inch notebook with a nearly perfect balance of everything you want in a back-to-school laptop. Starting configurations priced at just $720 make this notebook a very good value. This higher-end configuration, priced at $1,050, is a little more expensive than we prefer (we'd like to see it for less than $1,000). Still, Toshiba offers a lot of notebook for a fair price in this package. The only two areas where the Satellite M645 failed to meet or exceed our expectations were screen lid protection and hard drive performance. Since this laptop was clearly designed with students in mind, we want to see a durable lid (students aren't always careful with laptops). The slow hard drive probably won't be an issue for the overwhelming majority of users, but if you want to get the best possible performance from this laptop it really needs a faster drive. Bottom line, despite a few minor issues, the Toshiba Satellite M645 makes a great choice for students who are looking for a 14-inch laptop and want the "best bang for their buck."

Toshiba makes laptops like Volvo makes cars: sturdy, well-featured, but not always inspiring. Midsized Toshiba Satellite laptops tend to blend together in terms of design, and the Satellite M645-S4055 falls into that camp. The Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055 has a great combination of audio/video quality and fast graphics, but its short battery life compromises the equation on what's otherwise a rock-solid midrange laptop.

Toshiba claims that its new series of Satellite M645 14-inch laptops provide “do-everything performance” and are “perfect for mobile multimedia.” We can’t speak for the entire line—which starts at $729.99—but the $1,049.99 Toshiba Satellite M645-S4055 we looked at meets Toshiba’s bold claims. The Satellite M645-S4055 delivers performance power and mobile multimedia moxie in a stylish-looking laptop that costs just over a grand.

Toshiba's Satellite M645-S4118X is a decent overall multimedia system especially for its slightly smaller dimensions. The problem is that it falls a bit short of similarly priced competition when it comes to the display or the graphics system. The company either needs to boost features to be more competitive or drop the price to better reflect its true value.

It's not going to turn heads, even in a sedate boardroom environment, but the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4118X lets you get your work done quicker than most of the high-fashion alternatives. That means you can get on with your life, or if you prefer, wreak havoc on digital opponents with its exceptional gaming abilities.

In notebook design, if you don't want to go thinner and lighter, you have only one other option if you don't want to built a fatter laptop: Stay the same size and just cram more in. A wide-ranging feature set and strong performance set this $1,099 thin-and-light notebook apart. You can’t find a better all-around 14-inch laptop for this size and price.

I think the most frustrating thing about reviewing the Toshiba Satellite M645 was that I wanted it to succeed and instead came away thinking about what might have been. This isn't a bad notebook by any stretch of the imagination: it runs cool and quiet, has USB 3.0 connectivity, and sports switchable graphics in a 14-inch chassis.

There might be nothing more disappointing as a product that approaches perfection, only to be undone by one key failure. The Toshiba Satellite M645-S4118X has a killer combination of Blu-ray, high-end graphics, and a fast processor at a price slightly north of $1,000, but poor battery life is the Achilles' heel on what would otherwise be an ideal 14-inch laptop.

Its lack of gaming credibility and robust battery life aside, the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4116 competes well with other similarly priced models such as the Editors' Choice Asus U41JF-A1 and the HP Envy 14-1210NR. As long as you plan to restrict your use of the M645-S4116 to productivity applications, and you never need to stray into more demanding graphics territory, this laptop should suit you admirably.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 310M: The GeForce 310M is the successor of the GeFore G210M and based on the same chip with very similar clock rates (shader speed +30MHz to 1530MHz).
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M: The Nvidia GeForce GT 330M is the successor of the GT 230M and technically just a slightly higher clocked GT 240M (but it should still maintain the power envelope of the GT 230M as the naming suggests).
NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M: Based on the GeForce GT 425M with slightly higher core clock speeds.

Intel Core i5:
450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.
460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
2410M:
Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

2.4 kg:
2.7 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
73.82%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
