The Toshiba Qosmio X870-11Q might have the sort of angry styling that excites teenage boys but it's packing extremely potent components under the steel-grey hood. With its latest Intel processor, a hearty serving of RAM and the powerful dedicated graphics card, the X870 is capable of tackling any office task, some photo and video editing and the latest gaming titles -- just don't try and carry it around for too long.

The Qosmio X870 is without doubt the best choice for anyone (with cash to burn) who needs the best gaming machine waiting for them at home. However, the styling and price won't appeal to everyone and if you still want the 3D experience, albeit with slightly less power, then the Samsung Series 7 Gamer is a worthy alternative.

The Toshiba Qosmio X870 packs an impressive set of high-end components leading to superb applications and graphics performance. Highlights are the quad-core Ivy Bridge processor, highly capable nVidia graphics processor and active 3D technology. Where this laptop falls flatter is its steep price tag, ugly design and toy-like plasticky build quality.

Without full pricing details, it’s tricky to guess at how the Toshiba Qosimo X870 gaming rig will compare with other portable options, but it has the basics in place. Decent build, a 3D-ready screen and support for the most popular gaming components of the moment should put it on the “to watch” list of anyone looking for a games laptop.

Toshiba's Qosmio X875-Q7280 offers a decent overall 17-inch gaming laptop but it has one major issue and that is the display. Most gaming laptops in this price range offer a full 1080p capable display but Toshiba opted for a lower resolution one. They make up for this by including more memory and storage space than much of the competition but it misses the fact that the graphics and display are the two most critical components for a gaming system.

A 3D gaming laptop. Toshiba updates its Qosmio Series with the X870 and we see the new Ivy Bridge processors make their debut in its 17-inch gaming machines. The substantial features offered should entice customers to purchase this 3D enabled gaming machine that we will review in this article.

The use of that i5 processor means that the Qosmio X870-143 is more of an all-round entertainment system than a dedicated gaming rig. But at £1199 it’s still a good option if you want a large-screen laptop that can handle music, video and the occasional gaming session.

Although tablets and ultrabooks garner most of the attention in the PC world, few classes of systems have as much flair as gaming rigs, where hulking, ostentatious designs typically outweigh concerns for portability and affordability.Although the Toshiba Qosmio X875-Q7390 features abundant storage capacity, a Blu-ray burner, and a superlative 3D display, its inability to produce playable framerates in high-quality settings and its dismal battery life hold it back.

There's plenty to like about the Toshiba Qosmio X875-Q7390, like its cool design, abundant storage capacity, and, of course, its superlative 3D display. At the end of the day, however, performance is the paramount consideration when it comes to gaming laptops. That, along with battery life, ultimately conspire against the Qosmio X875-Q7390 and prevent it from snagging the Asus G75VW-DH72's title as Editors' Choice for midrange gaming laptops. Still, its content creation abilities and incredible display alone make it worth checking out, and we nonetheless recommend doing so.

Back in 2011, 3D was touted as the next wave of tech. Flash forward to 2013, and 3D remains more a novelty than a truly compelling gaming feature. Thankfully, the Toshiba Qosmio X875-Q7390 can stand on its own as a viable gaming notebook. For $1,849, gamers get a Core i7 CPU, Nvidia GTX graphics and a pair of 1TB hard drives in a sleek, stylish package.

The Toshiba Qosmio X875 is a gaming laptop both inside and out thanks to its design and strong internal specs that include an Intel Core i7, 1080p display and 16GB of RAM. The display is also stereoscopic 3D-enabled and it also has a Blu-ray burner, which is a rarity. The design of the X875 is rather simple with some gaming-esque flares, like the red edges and slick black diamond-textured aluminum exterior. It is rather big and heavy at 16.5 x 10.7 x 1.7-inches and weighs 7.7-pounds.

As one of only a handful of 17-inch gaming laptops we've seen since the launch of Windows 8, the Toshiba Qosmio X875 already stands out from all the slim ultrabooks and convertibles we've reviewed recently on that basis alone. We have yet to see a truly great gaming laptop built from the ground up with Windows 8 in mind, but the 17-inch Toshiba Qosmio X875 can be configured into a powerful, reasonably priced mainstream gaming machine.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

3.4 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
3.6 kg:
Only a few laptops are in this weight class because the mobility is rather limited due to the high weight.
75.45%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
