Marathon runner in business attire. A slim and extremely light magnesium case makes the Toshiba Portégé Z30 one of the most mobile notebooks of its range. The lavishly equipped 13-inch laptop further scores with long battery runtimes and great performance - but is this enough to justify the expensive price of almost 1,500 Euros (~$2038)?

The Toshiba Portege Z30-A1301 offers a solid business ultrabook that's light enough to take anywhere, long-lasting enough to take you through a full workday (plus overtime), and offers all of the ports and connectors you might want. While it doesn't take the top spot from the Editors' Choice Dell Latitude e7440 Touch (which offers slightly better performance overall), it is a less expensive alternative, and you even have the option of getting it with Windows 7.

We've watched over the last year or two as mainstay business laptops gradually inch closer in design to their ultrabook competitors. This business-oriented ultrabook is well-built, thin, light, and comfortable to use. The latest "Haswell" CPU makes it fast, but a low-resolution screen diminishes its overall value.

As its makers no doubt intended, I found I was lugging the Toshiba Portégé Z30 around everywhere without noticing it as a major imposition. Also having a machine that's more likely to be alive than dead when it comes to battery life is major confidence booster, as you sense you can rely on it to get you through the day and then some. I could see it as an easy choice for frequent flyers.

Toshiba Portege Z30-A-12T
The Toshiba Portege Z30-A-12T strikes out as a light and solid machine. Encased in a magnesium chassis, its sturdiness is uncompromised. Solidness aside, it is notably light, weighing at only 1.2 kg. The color on its exterior appears in steel gray metallic. It is also equipped with three fast USB 3.0 ports, two display outputs (VGA and HDMI) as well as Gbit LAN. There is also multi-card support. Mounted on it is a 2.0 MP webcam. Display-wise, the 13.3-inch widescreen promises a WXGA resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, which corresponds to a pixel density of 118 DPI. Toshiba claims on achieving high brightness with its HD antiglare screen. The Z30 comes pre-installed with Windows 7 Professional and is capable of being upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro. Under its hood, it is powered by the 4th generation Intel Core i5-4200U with Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, an Intel HD Graphics 4400, and a 256 GB SSD. One striking feature of the Toshiba Portege is its battery life which Toshiba contends is capable of reaching a maximum of 12:41 h. All things considered, it is undeniable that the Portege Z30-A-12T is not some average subnotebook, but a powerful and well-made machine.Specifications

The configuration is based on a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-4200U dual-core processor, 4GB RAM (one free slot, expandable up to 16GB), it is offering the integrated Intel HD 4400 graphics and a 128GB Toshiba SSD (mSATA version, so the upgrade will be easy). This is sufficient for good performance in all segments except the graphical subsystem that is good enough for watching movies, but not for demanding applications and games that use graphics. This is a good business laptop; the only objection relates to the screen - for this price, it would have to be much better. At the price higher than 1000 Euros, we expect an IPS screen and a higher resolution, while everything else, from the build quality and used materials up to the autonomy and performance, is beyond reproach.
Positive: Extremely high-quality magnesium alloy case; very light; good autonomy; excellent configuration. Negative: Relatively low resolution of the screen.

Toshiba Portege Z30-B-111
The Toshiba Portege Z30-B-111 is an ultralight laptop that caters to the needs of business travellers. The well-built, lightweight magnesium chassis does not only look good, but feels stable and reliable. The laptop has met the high-quality standards and passed rigorous inspections carried out by the independent German test institute TUV Rheinland. It comes pre-installed with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit edition and there is an option to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit edition with an external DVD drive. The system comes with a 2.0 GHz Intel Core i3-5005U processor, 4 GB DDR3L RAM (maximum 16 GB), an Intel HD Graphics 5500 graphic card, a 128 GB Solid State Drive and a non-reflective 13.3 inch Toshiba HD High Brightness screen with LED backlight. However, the screen is not Full HD and only displays up to 1368 x 768 resolution. The keyboard is backlit and comfortable to type on. It does not come with a DVD drive but it has a multi format card reader, which supports SD and microSD. Moreover, there are three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, an external monitor port, an RJ-45 port, a headphone / microphone combo jack and an integrated 2 MP webcam. The laptop has a convenient weight of just 1.2 kg and Toshiba claims that the battery life can last up to 17 hours.Specifications

The Toshiba Portege Z30 system even with updates is a hard recommendation. There are a few good points to the ultraportable 13-inch laptop such as the wide range of peripheral ports, some strong performance and the Windows 7 operating system. The problem is that the very high price tag and terrible display for this price point just take away too much from what the system could have been.

Toshiba Portege Z30-A-1E1
The Toshiba Portege Z30-A-1E1 is a high performance, lightweight ultrabook with a sophisticated design. The chassis looks professional and clean with a classy hinge setup. Edges on the device are smooth and there is a lovely brush metal finish on the lid. The entire device comes in metallic steel grey and there is a black tile-style backlit keyboard. This comfortable keyboard has a non-slip matte textured finish while maintaining a slim profile and it has the added benefit of being spill-resistant. Users can select between Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 to be installed on the system. Display on the Toshiba Portege Z30-A-1E1 is a 13.3 inch Toshiba FHD non-reflective eDP panel. At the heart of the ultrabook is an Intel Core i7-4510U clocked at 2 GHz, up to 16 GB DDR3L RAM, an Intel HD Graphics 4400 GPU and a 512 GB SSD. We would like to give our final thoughts on two of the most important factors regarding business-oriented ultrabooks – the keyboard and the battery life. Firstly, the keys are a bit small to make room for the “F” buttons, but this actually isn’t a major problem and it’s easy to get used to it. In addition, the touchpad offers the much-needed comfort, responsiveness, and functionality, but we disliked the trackpad – it’s quite unpleasant to touch and feels awkward to use. Secondly, the battery life appears to be underwhelming. For a small, energy-efficient system a bit better battery performance was expected so in this aspect, the Portege Z30-A left us wanting more.

When you work hard, so will the Toshiba Z30t-B. It will easily slip into your briefcase or backpack, and its optional Core i7 CPU really flies. We also like the comfy keyboard, which is great for all your emails and reports, and the colorful display (although it's a bit dim). The security features -- including a password utility, PIN protection and a fingerprint sensor -- are also welcome.

Any business-minded ultrabook today has its work cut out for it in the dual-front battle with Lenovo’s strong alternatives (the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and LaVie Z) as well as with the ubiquitous Apple MacBook Air, the machine that arguably inspired the category in the first place (even if it’s not, specifically, a business machine). The Portege Z30t as we tested it manages contend on mostfronts.

Lightweight. This is premium range business for well-heeled customers: The entire who-is-who of laptop technology is on-board for 2000 Euros (~$2252). Unfortunately, there is also some conservative equipment. A modern USB Type-C? - Not in sight. On the other hand, plenty of security and productivity features like a docking port, LTE modem and TPM are present.

Laptops with a $1,500 price tag need to do something special. And in today's market, a laptop with "a lot of ports and inputs" may be different, but it's not special. The Portégé Z30, with its pointing stick and RGB port, is basically an IBM ThinkPad with its stomach stapled. Until its price comes down, this old-at-heart laptop will only satisfy business travelers who have very particular security, durability and client needs – or an extreme case of nostalgia.

If you’re looking for business-class laptop, you’ve got options, so devices that hope to crack this market need to stand out in some way. The Toshiba Portege offers good performance, ports for everything, and fantastic battery life, but at the same time has an awful display. This leaves it stacking up poorly against the competition.

Toshiba Portege Z30-C-16P
With an ultra-thin, premium design that travels light and packed full of features to get work done anywhere, Toshiba’s Portege Z30-C-16P encompasses everything required for the businessmen to stay productive while on the move. Weighing at 1.2 kg, the Z30-C measures at 316.0 x 227.0 x 13.9 (front) / 17.9 (rear) mm (W x D x H), making it small enough to carry with ease. Despite its size, the ultrabook remains highly robust thanks to its durable but light magnesium alloy chassis. The size of the Z30-C’s display is quite large for an ultrabook. The 13.3-inch display is a non-reflective Full HD TFT High Brightness eDP display with LED backlighting and 16:9 aspect ratio. The size of the display also allows for 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, with 166 PPI. For its base, the Z30-C has a full-size matt black backlit keyboard that illuminates a soft white glow, so users will not hurt their eyes while typing in the dark. The mechanics of the Chiclet-style keyboard also provides a pleasant typing experience, providing springy feedback with excellent travel. The clickpad has multi-touch control gestures supporting various scroll, zoom and launch functionalities, which are all customizable, many of which are already the standard in Windows 10. Alternatively, there is also a pointing stick (or AccuPoint, as Toshiba calls it) to mouse around. The Z30-C also comes with an enterprise-standard fingerprint scanner for an extra security measure.
The Z30-C offers a 6th generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor providing a lot of horse power packed into the slim machine, allowing the Z30-C to stand proudly alongside its price-point competitors. Modern games are playable with the on-board Z30-C’s Intel HD Graphics 520, but only at low settings and resolutions. That is hardly surprising since the Z30-C is not meant to be a gaming machine, but it is enough to satisfy casual gamers who occasionally indulge in some light gaming. Along with 16 GB of RAM, the Z30-C can crunch numbers, browse the web and carry out any other day-to-day tasks without any noticeable lag. In terms of port diversity, this is where the Z30-C truly shines. It is equipped with three USB 3.0 ports, one RGB port, one RJ-45 port, an HDMI port supporting 1080p signal format, an SD card slot and one headphone/microphone combo jack. The Z30 is one of the few ultrabooks prepared to interface directly with those not-quite-obsolete hardware, like projectors and hardwired Internet connections. At the heart of the Z30-C is a 4 cell Lithium-ion polymer battery that can impressively last up to 11 hours of usage on a single charge – pretty great for an ultrabook. On the memory front, the Z30-C features a 512 GB SSD. With premium looks and a respectable specs, the Toshiba Portege Z30-C-16P is a great choice for people in any professional field. Being a Portege also means that the price is slightly on the high point, like Lenovo’s Thinkpad series.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

13.00:
There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.

77.63%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
