All up, the Toshiba Portege 830 is undeniably good. It possesses great performance and excellent battery life, it's strongly built, it has an optical drive, and it's comfortable to use overall. We wish it had more premium features though, such as a backlit keyboard and an ambient light sensor. We'd also like a more vibrant screen, keys with better travel and responsiveness, and more versatile fingerprint reader software.

Small, light, neat, but lacking the kind of sparkle that would really justify its high price, the Toshiba Portégé R830 certainly has a market, but could have garnered a larger one with a little more attention to detail.

The Toshiba Portege R830 aims to put some serious firepower at your fingertips when you're on the move. Our version of the Toshiba Portege R830, the R830-138, offers great performance and some smashing features, such as integrated mobile broadband. There's no denying that it's very expensive for a 13-inch laptop, though.

The Toshiba Portégé R830 isn't perfect. Not everyone will like the keyboard and it's not cheap, but it's stylish, well-built, has USB3 and lengthy battery life too. It's one of the best ultraportable laptops we've seen yet. Those who need the longest possible battery life should still opt for the 13in MacBook Air though, despite its ageing processor.

The laptop’s 500GB hard drive is fairly clean of bloatware. There are a few preloaded offers from Amazon, NetZero, and Skype, along with the ubiquitous 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security and the ad-supported Microsoft Office Starter 2010. Toshiba also includes a number of its own apps. Toshiba Book Place is a basic e-book reader, while Toshiba Bulletin Board is a flashy but largely useless app to organize notes and photos.

Low cost expert. Light, long battery life, and well put together. With the low end version of the Portégé R830 from Toshiba premium business is now affordable. The question is whether the claims of an ideal picture quality are also true?

The Toshiba Portege R830 is a breed of laptops that is getting increasingly rarer by the day. Manufacturers are slowly getting rid of the optical drive, one way or the other to cut down on size and weight, giving us essentially what we call Ultrabooks. The R830 however, is not an Ultrabook. It doesn’t have many of the attributes that defines an Ultrabook, like a Low-Voltage-Processor, low cost, or even an SSD.

Although it's an expensive machine, it's more than capable with generous processor and memory specifications. We love the hardware, which is both tough and stylish, and we think it's a laptop we'd be very happy using for several years to come.

Despite its minor quirks, we’re still very impressed with the R830. We don’t know of a lighter, more powerful laptop, and its battery runtime of almost seven hours is a Lab record.

At this price, you might expect the Portege R830 to have more premium features - a backlit keyboard, an ambient light sensor, discrete graphics or a better quality screen - but then you remember it has mobile broadband, wireless display, an optical drive and a full-power Core i5 and the price seems more reasonable. For the business user - or anyone who needs a lightweight workhorse - the balance of features make sense, and the battery life is welcome (and even switchable graphics would have a significant impact on that). You could quibble about some of the choices, but the R830 has distinct advantages over its flashier competition.

But that was five months ago--an eternity in PC time. Now that second-generation Intel Sandy Bridge chips are in nearly every competing laptop, how does the Portege stack up? Excellent battery life, a light weight, and great pricing make the Toshiba Portege R835 hard to beat, even in the highly competitive 13-inch laptop category.

Graphics aside, the raw performance of the Toshiba Portégé R830-1DZ is head and shoulders above the opposition in this group test. The blend of high-quality components and variety of connectivity options in this small shell combine to make the Portégé a winner. It does cost some £300 more than a 13in MacBook Pro but the extra performance and decent screen make it attractive. Just make sure you can handle all that noise.

The Portégé R830 is priced at Rs.85,589 (MRP) and Rs. 80,990 (MOP). It’s got the specs, but the price is quite exorbitant. The only noticeable cons in the performance were lack of a backlit keyboard and slight overheating when pushed to the max. Besides that, it’s fast, efficient, powerful and has a brilliant battery life – the bare essentials needed for a powerhouse performer. If the pricing is not a problem for you, then the R830 is a good buy.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
