While Age of Empires IV: Dynasties of the East has mixed reviews on display, many of them indicate that players are fascinated by what they feel is a fresh take that boosts replayability for the title considerably, even as some decry bugs that continue to plague it post-release.

With the recent rise in popularity of Roguelikes and Roguelites, it’s no surprise that developers are experimenting with different genres and playstyles. The latest game to try to adapt this new craze is the very well-known and very well-loved Age of Empires 4.

Microsoft’s strategy simulator was first released in 2021 and received a Very Positive rating on Steam, with over 26,000 positive reviews amid regular balance and content updates. Players can immerse themselves “in a rich historical setting of 10 diverse civilizations across the world, from the English to the Chinese to the Delhi Sultanate, in your quest for victory.”

With multiple DLCs to enhance one’s gameplay, Age of Empires 4 aims to cater to a plethora of audiences, including those who want a roguelike experience based on their most recent release.

Dynasties of the East is the latest DLC available for Age of Empires 4. It was released on the 4th of November, adding significant content to the base game, including four race variants:  The Golden Horde (Mongol Variant), The Macedonian Dynasty (Byzantine Variant),  Sengoku Daimyo (Japanese Variant), and The Tughlaq Dynasty (Delhi Sultanate Variant).

On top of this, the game introduces a new mode called “The Crucible,” something it dubs as “A New Roguelite RTS Experience.” The description of The Crucible is pretty self-explanatory, as it establishes its niche as a different, yet similar experience for players used to roguelike titles, as well as the strategy that AoE 4 offers:

A bold new single-player mode that redefines what’s possible in an Age of Empires game. Built to encourage strategic exploration, The Crucible fuses classic RTS mechanics with shifting battle conditions, evolving enemies, and unpredictable twists that test your ability to adapt. You’ve conquered history. Now conquer the unknown.

Players will be charged with protecting their wonder from increasingly difficult enemies with powerful “Boons” that grant them powerful upgrades and abilities during the mission. Players can expect each Crucible run to be a unique and unpredictable journey, featuring random challenges, escalating difficulties, and challenging objectives.

Age of Empires 4 is available to purchase on Steam for $39.99, and the DLC Dynasties of the East is available for $19.99. It has previously been on sale on the platform, with a 15% discount.
