The new thin and lightweight ThinkPad T14s G5 is a major redesign of this thin and lightweight laptop. Importantly, Lenovo axes the AMD version of this model, going Intel-only. The new design focuses on making the device smaller and minimizing screen bezels.

While the new Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 bets on repairability, the thinner Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G5 takes a different route.

This more premium variant of the T series has long followed the footsteps of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and the latest ThinkPad T14s Gen 5 is no different. This entails a new design that is very close to the old ThinkPad X1 Carbon G11 in looks. The new model adopts the same mono-hinge design of the X1 Carbon. The reason: The T14s Gen 5 adopts much thinner screen bezels, limiting the space in the lid that was formerly used for the WiFi and WWAN antennas. Those are instead placed in the wide hinge cover. Another change to allow for thinner screen bezels is the inclusion of a reverse notch, which is where the 5 Mpix webcam is placed. Looking at the footprint comparison with the previous model, the efforts Lenovo has undertaken have certainly paid off if a size reduction was the goal:

  • ThinkPad T14s G4: 317.5 x 226.9 mm
  • ThinkPad T14s G5: 313.6 x 219.4 mm

Besides the smaller size, there are several other design changes on the outside. Lenovo puts in a new keyboard with tactile markers, flipped FN/Ctrl keys and a Windows Copilot key / menu key. The speakers are shifted to the sides of the keyboard. Also, the ThinkPad logo is now black and debossed.

No more AMD option in the ThinkPad T14s

Unlike the preceding model, the new Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 5 has no AMD option. This is an Intel only device, with Lenovo offering Core Ultra CPUs with Intel ARC graphics. The LPDDR5X memory is upgraded to up to 64 GB of capacity. Also upgraded is the 2.8K OLED screen, from 60 to 120 Hz. Last but not least, Lenovo is changing the screen brightness of the basic WUXGA screen option from 300 to 400 cd/m² by using a new 3M optical film on the panel. This film also decreases the power consumption by 16 percent according to Lenovo.
