While X/Twitter alternative Bluesky needed over 3 years to hit the 15 million users threshold, Meta's Threads did the same in around 10 hours. Although Threads is now struggling to hit 300 million users, it looks like "more than 250 million" is enough to finally set in motion the plan to monetize this platform. Back in mid-2023, Mark Zuckerberg said that Threads has the potential to become the company's next social network to hit 1 billion users and that the platform will get advertising after reaching "hundreds of millions" without coming up with an accurate number. Now, we find out that this could happen next year.
According to "three people with direct knowledge of the plans" who spoke to the Information, advertising is coming to Threads in early 2025. Last month, Zuckerberg mentioned 275 million monthly active users when speaking about Threads and its future. The three insiders familiar with the matter also said that a limited number of advertisers will be allowed on the platform in the first wave, and this will happen in January 2025.
On the other hand, Meta CFO Susan Li spoke about this during a post-earnings call that took place in October and said that the company does not expect Threads to become "a meaningful driver of 2025 revenue" while also revealing that the app will get more features in the near future. Sadly, she did not disclose any details regarding these upcoming treats. As Facebook is currently swarming with scams and advertising of many questionable brands while often enforcing pointless censorship of various opinions or topics, Meta could use Threads to set things right. Obviously, they could also repeat Facebook's mistakes, so it remains to see what 2025 will bring for the users of this piece of code.
