The count includes all major Grand Theft Auto title releases, as well as its standalone 'Episodes from Liberty City' offerings.

While Grand Theft Auto has already solidified itself as a juggernaut in the gaming industry, Take-Two Interactive’s August 7, 2025, financial earnings call provided some updated numbers to back the franchise’s dominance in the open-world sandbox genre. According to VGChartz, Take-Two has sold 455 million units globally across Grand Theft Auto’s five mainline titles, including spin-offs.

Grand Theft Auto V currently leads the pack with 215 million units moved since its debut in 2013 and generated a staggering $1 billion in retail sales, and still remains the top-selling game in the U.S. based on both revenue and units.

While the earnings call didn’t give specifics about older GTA titles, it’s probable that Grand Theft Auto IV, Vice City, and San Andreas were some of its key movers, driving a chunk of sales, given the hefty number of overall units moved.

Take-Two’s other franchises have also hit some noteworthy sales figures. The Red Dead Redemption franchise has surpassed 104 million units. Specifically, Red Dead Redemption 2 has shipped over 77 million units in its lifetime.

NBA 2K has hit sales of over 162 million units, the Borderlands franchise has hit 94 million units, while Sid Meier’s Civilization has sold over 77 million. Still, Grand Theft Auto takes the crown as Take-Two’s biggest blockbuster franchise, approximately shy of 45 million units from its half-a-billion target.

With that said, hype for GTA VI is at an all-time high. The game is set for a May 26, 2026, release date, after a delay from its earlier Fall 2025 launch window. The game was rumored to be delayed further into September 2026, but Rockstar confirmed that GTA VI is still currently on track for its May 2026 release.

The last update for GTA VI from Rockstar Games was its second trailer, posted on May 6, 2025.  The trailer has garnered over 127 million views with 6.1 million likes on YouTube. With excitement for GTA VI reaching new heights, the Grand Theft Auto fandom eagerly awaits further updates from Rockstar as the studio continues to keep things under wraps.

Considering GTA V’s sales figures, it's evident that GTA VI will soar past its previous installment’s record, with analysts predicting a revenue of $7.6 billion in 2 months, estimating that Rockstar will recoup development costs in under a month.
