That time of year has come once more. No, not the time for gifts, food, and cold weather, but the time to celebrate the best gaming has to offer with The Game Awards. This year, Steam has joined in on the festivities by discounting some of the best previous Game Awards category winners.

1. Hades - 50% off

Hades is a roguelike dungeon crawler with hack-n-slash elements that was released in 2020 and won both the Best Independent Game and best Action Game at The Game Awards 2020. The game has players take control of Zagreus, son of Hades, as he embarks on a quest to escape the underworld. Hades stands out above other roguelikes for its simple, yet visceral combat, rewarding character progression, and surprisingly gripping storytelling.

A combination of the excellent game mechanics, the hand-drawn art style, intricate and varied level design, and superb soundtrack make for an altogether fantastic experience — as long as you're willing to replay it as many times as it takes to actually get to the true ending of the story.

Hades is on sale on Steam for US$12.49 until December 12, 2022.

If you've been a gamer for more than a few minutes, you'll know that certain games with a strong fighting focus are better on a controller, much like the 8BitDo Pro 2 Wired Controller, available on Amazon.

2. Deathloop - 67% off

Winner of both Best Game Direction and Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2021, Deathloop is an excellent game if you're into the idea of a story-driven FPS roguelike with a sprinkling of puzzles and stealth gameplay. In Deathloop, you play as Colt, who is stuck on an island that is experiencing the most violent version of Groundhog Day. While the rest of the island's inhabitants experience the same day over and over again, the player must explore the island and assassinate the people that run it using weapons and various abilities without being discovered.

Deathloop deftly employs the roguelike death mechanic and its quirky time system to shift the gameplay loop from "recklessly murder until you get it right" to something more nuanced that requires more thought and careful exploration to conquer.

You can snag Deathloop on sale on Steam for US$19.79 until December 12, 2022.

3. Guilty Gear -Strive-

If you're a fan of the fighting game genre, you're sure to have at least heard of Guilty Gear. The latest installment in the franchise, Guilty Gear -Strive-, won Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2021. While 2021 wasn't a jam-packed year in terms of fighting game releases, Strive can certainly stand on its own merits as a unique take on the genre. Guilty Gear -Strive- takes things in a slightly different direction than its notoriously complex predecessors. The quirky characters, highly stylised visuals, and heavy metal soundtrack remain, but the fighting mechanics have been slimmed down a little and reworked to make the game more accessible and easier to pick up.

Featuring split-screen PvP on PC — as well as an epic story that admittedly takes some prior knowledge to follow — Guilty Gear -Strive- makes for a great fighting game to get into whether you want to get into the story or play with friends or family, or even get into 2D fighting games more seriously.

Guilty Gear -Strive- is on sale on Steam for US$29.99 until December 12, 2022.
