The end of the year is a busy time for techies of all flavours, and it's no different for gamers, with many games launching in preparation for the holiday season. Here are three intriguing releases from November and early December that shouldn't be missed by anyone who enjoys some action.

1. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Technically not a new release but finally available on something other than a PlayStation, Spider-Man: Miles Morales offers a take on a version of Spider-Man that isn't Peter Parker. A story-driven experience, the game follows the titular character as he learns what it means to be Spider-Man as new dangers threaten to destroy his home. Spider-Man: Miles Morales takes place in an open world, allowing players to indulge their deepest web-slinging desires.

The combat mechanics and graphical quality of the game are befitting of the AAA price tag the game commands, even two years after the initial console release. Sony's web-slinging action-adventure game is available on Steam for US$49.99, which is a steep ask, but it is ultimately worth it if you enjoy superhero games that are as equally adept at storytelling as they are at acrobatic spectacle combat and graphical showmanship.

2. Predecessor

Predecessor is a MOBA game with a third-person point of view, making it akin to the likes of DOTA and League of Legends but far more immersive. If you've ever played Paladins, Destiny, Smite, or Paragon, which inspired much of Predecessor, you'll know how much of a difference switching from the top-down view changes things. Players can choose from a cast of 20 champions to compete in fast-paced matches consisting of two teams of five players that take place in a richly-detailed map.

Each champion fits into one of the five classic MOBA roles and has abilities to complement its intended purpose. Your success as a team and individual player will depend on your play style, strategy, and teamwork. The graphics in Predecessor are also a highlight, shying away from the cartoonish designs of the likes of Paladins and presenting players with more realism while managing to not look gritty and dark.

Despite being in early access on Steam, Predecessor has received mostly positive reviews. There are two things you should be aware of before you spend any money on Predecessor, though. Firstly, the developer has stated that it intends for the game to become free-to-play within six to 12 months as it exits early access, which is partially why spending US$9.99 — which is a 50% discount, to be fair — on Steam, also gets you a the rare DLC to use in-game (which unlocks all 20 champions and some other perks). Secondly, Paragon: The Overprime is launching on December 6, 2022 as a free-to-play title and aims to scratch the same third-person-shooter-MOBA itch.

3. We Who Are About To Die

We Who Are About To Die launches players back into the days of the Roman gladiator as both the career manager and the gladiator. The indie title is an odd combination of ARPG, combat simulator, and spectacle fighter, with roguelite elements and permanent death. Players develop a gladiator and compete in the arena to please the crowd in order to rise above the competition. The aim of the game is to fight through the ranks, but the biggest draws of the game are the diverse weapon choice, solid combat system, and excellent character progression on offer. We Who Are About To Die is available on Steam for US$21.99.

In case you haven't heard, graphics cards are back in stock, so it might be the perfect time to update your gaming rig with something like the ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3070 Twin Edge OC White Edition, available on Amazon.
