Tesla has issued a recall for its Model Y steering wheel to address potentially loose steering wheel assembly bolts. This isn't the first time Tesla has had issues with the steering assembly. An instance of the steering wheel detaching almost immediately after delivery went viral on Twitter a few months prior, launching an NHTSA investigation. This latest recall is, however, unrelated to the viral posts that sparked the NHTSA investigation — this time, the retention hardware is there, it's just not torqued to spec.

The latest in a long line of Tesla recalls has to do with the 2022-2023 Tesla Model Y and its steering assembly potentially coming loose. The recall in question is voluntary, meaning it wasn't prompted by the NHTSA, and the NHTSA campaign notes that there are only 137 potentially affected units. The affected vehicles could have a loose fastener that could cause the steering wheel to come loose while driving.

A loose fastener may allow the steering wheel to disconnect from the steering column, which can cause a loss of steering control and increase the risk of a crash. — NHTSA

Tesla's 2023 Model Y has thus far been subject to five recalls through the NHTSA, with three relating to hardware and the other two to software. Recalls are a normal part of the automotive industry, but fact that all three of the hardware-related recalls for the Tesla Model Y were prompted by improperly-secured fasteners — for the second row seat and suspension lateral link — raises some questions about Tesla's quality control and assembly.

It's also been previously reported that Tesla has the highest number of lifetime recalls of all car makers over the last decade, although this data includes software recalls that are resolved via OTA updates. The Model Y is also projected to have the highest number of recalls over the next 30 years, based on estimates from the same data.
