Tesla outs $7,000 cheaper Model Y AWD with the shortest range on a charge

Tesla is now selling no less than seven Model Y trims globally. After introducing a long-range Model Y RWD in Europe, it has now released a short-range Model Y AWD in the US. It also renamed the Model Y Standard to Model Y RWD to avoid associations with cheapness.

As a result, Tesla now has five Model Y trims to pick from in the US, in a $39,990-$57,490 price range, truly something for everybody now that the Model S and Model X have been nixed from its portfolio.

Since Tesla simply put another motor on the cheapest RWD Model Y but kept battery capacity the same, the new Model Y AWD trim has the shortest range out of all Model Y versions sold in the US and is the only Tesla vehicle with a sub-300-mile range.

At first blush, a price difference of $7,000 with the Premium AWD trim is enough to warrant the new Model Y AWD's arrival on the affordable Tesla scene. The Standard RWD version wasn't selling well, so Tesla had to spike its base trim portfolio.

On the other hand, buyers would lose the vented and motorized leather seats, the light bar, the panoramic glass roof, the HEPA filter, the matrix LED headlights, the acoustic glass, and the better stereo, not to mention there is a more limited amount of colors to choose from. In terms of range, they only lose 30 miles or so, though, so the lack of design features and some interior comforts may not be a dealbreaker if someone is after a $7,000 cheaper AWD Tesla.
