Tesla brings 0% Model Y APR financing rate and heavily taxed Cybertruck to Canada
Tesla seems to be nearly done with the early Cybertruck reservations list in the US, with barely a week or two of backlog left, and is now quickly filling in any new orders.
That may be one of the reasons that it decided to bring the Cybertruck, previously a US-exclusive vehicle, to Canada as well, with the release starting this week.
The government of British Columbia (BC), however, just confirmed that the Cybertruck will be a subject of its up to 20% luxury tax, bumping up its already high price significantly.
The Cybertruck price starts from about CA$137,990 there for the dual-motor AWD trim. When all the taxes, including the federal levy on luxury items, are applied, the base Cybertruck pricing in BC can quickly shoot up to more than the equivalent of US$120,000, a level previously reserved for the tri-motor Cyberbeast Foundation Series trim in the US.
Tesla fought the federal luxury tax, but the BC government ultimately decided that the Cybertruck is a heavy and expensive enough toy to warrant its levy on pricey vehicles.
As if to soothe the pain of its fans up north, Tesla introduced the same zero Model Y financing interest rate deal it had in the US last month. Those who purchase the FSD feature together with the Model Y or Model 3 in Canada, can now enjoy a 0% APR financing deal for payment periods of up to 48 months, too.
Starting this month, Tesla removed the FSD purchase requirement for getting the 0% Model Y APR financing rate in the US, so it might do the same in Canada at some point as well.
