While Dodge Chargers, both the SRT Hellcat and HEMI models, are the most stolen vehicles in the US, together with the Infinity Q50 and the Dodge Challenger, Tesla vehicles are at the opposite end. The Model 3 and Model Y are the least stolen cars now.

Electric vehicles can present many challenges to their owners, but worry about getting them stolen is not one of those. The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 just topped the ranking of least stolen vehicles in the US, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI).

Top 10 least stolen cars in the US

  1. Tesla Model 3 4WD
  2. Tesla Model Y 4WD
  3. Volvo XC90 4WD
  4. GMC Acadia 4WD
  5. Tesla Model X 4WD
  6. Volvo XC40 4WD
  7. Tesla Model 3
  8. Chevrolet Trailblazer 4WD
  9. Lexus UX 250 hybrid 4WD
  10. Volvo XC60 4WD

It's evidently not because Tesla cars are not pricey or attractive for thieves, as HLDI examined vehicle theft data from 2020 to 2022 when the Model 3 and Model Y prices were at their peak. Apparently, it's just hard to steal an electric car like Tesla, with all of its smart functions, security cameras, or Sentry Mode which Tesla details as follows:

When enabled, your vehicle's cameras and sensors (if equipped) remain powered on and ready to record suspicious activity around your vehicle when Model 3 is locked and in Park. Think of Sentry Mode as an intelligent vehicle security system that alerts you when it detects possible threats nearby. If a threat is detected, Sentry Mode pulses the headlights, sounds the alarm, and displays a message on the touchscreen indicating that the cameras may be recording to inform individuals outside of the vehicle. You will receive an alert on your phone through the mobile app and footage of the event is saved to USB drive (if installed).

When it comes to the most stolen cars in the US, though, it's mostly muscle cars and luxury SUVs, followed by powerful pickup trucks.

  2. Dodge Charger HEMI
  3. Infiniti Q50
  4. Dodge Challenger
  5. Land Rover Range Rover
  6. Kia Sportage
  7. Land Rover Range Rover Sport 4WD
  8. Kia Sportage 4WD
  9. Honda CR-V 4WD
  10. BMW X6 4WD

The KIA and Hyundai vehicles in the ranking are a special case as lately they are being stolen even as a TikTok challenge which explains the relatively large amount of affordable models from these two brands in the list. All in all, while Tesla owners may have other issues with their cars, theft is not one of them, while as other vehicles become smarter, car theft numbers as a whole could drop.
