Right after announcing a June release date for the much-awaited System Shock 2 remaster, Nightdive Studios is now talking about the future of the beloved franchise.
The developer has offered a cautious update on the future of the System Shock franchise, suggesting a full remake of System Shock 2 could be possible while acknowledging the unresolved status of System Shock 3.
In a recent interview with VGC, Nightdive’s director of business development, Larry Kuperman, addressed fan interest in a System Shock 2 remake following the upcoming System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster, due June 26. When asked why Nightdive opted for a remaster rather than a full remake, Kuperman teased, “Are you somehow under the impression that because we do a remaster that we won’t be able to do a remake in the future?” He added, “That might be something that I can either confirm or deny. But there’s going to be content coming out.”
However, the fate of System Shock 3 remains unclear. The sequel, initially licensed to Otherside Entertainment, was acquired by Tencent in 2020, but there have been no further updates on this. Kuperman admitted the situation is “very complicated” and could take “potentially within a year” to clarify - or longer. While Nightdive retains rights to the first two games, it has no direct control over System Shock 3.
Despite the uncertainty, Kuperman mentioned Nightdive’s plans for the franchise within its domain, including potential remakes, new content, and cross-media projects like the previously announced live-action System Shock series.
For now, fans can look forward to the System Shock 2 remaster, featuring enhanced visuals, updated co-op, and quality-of-life improvements. This remaster is launching on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC this June.
