Games Done Quick is perhaps the biggest organization in the speedrunning community, and its annual Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) event often garners hundreds of thousands of viewers while raising millions of dollars for charity. The finalized games list and schedule has been released for SGDQ 2022.
This year's event will feature over 120 games across a variety of platforms and generations, with entries ranging from brand new releases like Kirby and the Forgotten Land for the Nintendo Switch all the way back to 1988's Blaster Master on the NES. The event will wrap up with an All Remembrances run of Elden Ring on the PC, which should wrap up just before midnight on the last day.
SGDQ 2022 marks the first time in two years that a Games Done Quick event will be held in person. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, SGDQ 2020 and SGDQ 2021 were held online via streaming. Additionally, Games Done Quick's annual winter event, known as Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ), was held online for both 2021 and earlier this year.
SGDQ 2022 will raise money for Doctors Without Borders, a charity it has partnered with for several years now. The event has high expectations for the amount of money it raises for charity. Last year's SGDQ raised over US$2.8 million for Doctors Without Borders, and AGDQ 2022 raised over US$3.4 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation in January.
This year's SGDQ will have many of the same staples as prior events, including Awful Block (which showcases games generally considered to be terrible), a group of Tool Assisted Speedruns (TAS) which use computers to optimize gameplay, and several bonus incentives or speedruns that will only be performed if donations hit a certain dollar amount.
