Astroneer, a charming survival craft sandbox game with a vast open world, has dropped to an all-time low price on Steam. Astroneer features all of the hallmarks of a survival craft game — resource extraction and management, exploration and crafting, base building, and automation — but with a more user-friendly tilt than competitors like Satisfactory.

The survival-craft genre has had a massive surge in popularity in recent years, and Astroneer is one of the more influential games in the genre's heyday, releasing on Steam way back in 2016. It helped popularise many of the more unique and surreal elements and co-op gameplay mechanics that you might see in newer survival-craft and adventure games. Despite its age and 17,986-player peak, Astroneer still has a daily peak player count of around 3,500 players, which is quite impressive for such an old game.

Astroneer is also slated to receive a massive content update in November, this year, suggesting that the developer is still committed to making the game better for its players, even after nearly 10 years on Steam. Until September 8, Astroneer is discounted on Steam by 67%, bringing its price down to just $9.89, and making it well worth checking out if you've been hankering for something a little different.

Astroneer gameplay highlights and reviews

In a nutshell, the premise of Astroneer is that you, as the player, have to survive on an alien planet, establish a base of operations, and, eventually, explore other nearby planets to expand your base. There are elements of automation in Astroneer that make it more approachable for newer players. It is often praised for being an approachable, almost relaxing experience, as opposed to something like The Northgard or Soulmask, where you could be attacked at any point in time and lose potentially hours or days of exploration, building, researching, and crafting progress. Instead, aside from the occasional aggressive plant, Astroneer pits you against yourself and the foreign environment you find yourself in.

As an Astroneer, one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal is a terrain tool, which allows you to destroy, shape, harvest, and rebuild the planet itself as you see fit. In Astroneer, everything you build is modular and can be moved around and reorganised, even after construction is complete, allowing you to optimise any automation, power generation, logistics, and resource gathering systems to your heart's content.

While the basic premise of Astroneer is fairly simple, there are also deeper mysteries that appear for those interested in delving a little deeper — this is where things start to get surreal. The game often asks you to carefully consider your next move and weigh your options, without pressuring you in either direction or to make a rushed decision.

Astroneer also features online co-op, with up to four players, and other players can casually come and go in your game session, if you so choose. There are a total of seven entities to explore in the Astroneer solar system, and a number of different biomes on each planet, each with its own resources and unique visual style, but the solar system is procedurally generated on each new save, so every adventure feels different. The planets range from the Earth-like Sylva and forested Vesania to the arid Calidor and the toxic wastelands of Atrox. If those aren't to your liking, you can use the custom games feature to customise things further and dial in the difficulty to your liking.

Since its launch, Astroneer has earned itself a 90% positive Steam review rating, with over 120,000 positive reviews praising it for things like its approachability, rewarding progression and exploration, and the "chill vibe" that doesn't demand too much of you or baby you.

Check out the trailer below to sample the cutesy graphics that also make Astroneer an excellent game to play on something like the Asus ROG Ally (curr. $649.99 on Amazon).
