The much cheaper Starlink Residential Lite plan that SpaceX launched not long ago can now be had for five times less by certain New York state residents.
In order to comply with the New York Affordable Broadband Act that got into effect recently, Starlink is now offering a $15/month Residential Lite plan to eligible citizens there.
While Starlink's standard Residential plan costs $120/month for unlimited data at the top up to 400 Mbps speeds that the SpaceX satellite constellation coverage is capable of in a given area, the $80 Residential Lite plan offers deprioritized data at speeds as low as 40 Mbps.
Starlink $15/month Residential Lite plan
If low-income Starlink subscribers in the state of New York are content with even lower speeds on a Residential Lite plan, they can now claim 25 Mbps for just $15/month.
Needless to say, the $15/month Starlink price is only for those state residents who can meet the New York Affordable Broadband Act eligibility criteria, as follows:
- Participation in the National School Lunch Program: Approval letter indicating current participation in the National School Lunch Program, including your child's name, the school name, and the address.
- Participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Benefits: Approval letter for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.
- Enrollment in Medicaid: Medicaid card or most recent eligibility letter for any member of your household.
- Recipient of a Senior Citizen or Disability Rent Increase Exemptions: Approval order for rent increase exemption that includes the benefit start and end date.
- Recipient of a Utility Affordability Benefit: Bill statement within the last 60 days indicating affordability benefit amount.
Starlink asks that those low-income households who comply sign up for a Residential Lite service plan that matches the address on the supporting documents and submit them for approval by launching a ticket at the www.support.starlink.com address with "New York Affordable Broadband Act" in the ticket subject line.
Unfortunately, this means that those low-income New Yorkers on Medicaid or SNAP will actually have to buy their own $350 Starlink Standard Kit that is now discounted on Amazon, as that is the only way to sign up for the Residential Plan service.
Starlink tried to wiggle out of the New York Affordable Broadband Act mandate by claiming that it has fewer subscribers in the state than stipulated in the legislation. With its customer base set for exponential growth, though, Starlink got on with the program to offer no less than 25 Mbps Internet speeds for no more than $15/month to low-income New Yorkers.
