Music streaming service Spotify has always been available without a paid subscription, but with serious limitations. In addition to ad interruptions and greatly reduced audio quality due to 160 kbp compression, users without a subscription couldn't even search for and play songs specifically.
Instead, albums and playlists could only be played in a random order. This is now changing, as it is now possible to search for and play songs specifically without a subscription. Freemium users can now also open links to a single song and even create their own playlists, add artwork and play them in any order. Spotify also offers free users recommendations for additional songs or podcasts that can be added to a playlist.
Furthermore, Spotify now grants freemium users access to daily and weekly automatically generated playlists tailored to the tastes of each user. Sharing songs and displaying song lyrics is also possible. These measures are intended to encourage freemium users to spend more time on the Spotify app, thereby exposing them to more advertising, which in turn will boost revenue.
The $11.99 premium subscription is intended to attract customers with a range of additional features, starting with significantly improved lossless sound quality. As always, a premium subscription is required to create AI playlists, download music for offline use or stream audiobooks.
