Sony unveils 28-70mm F2 G Master lens for E-Mount cameras at Creative Space NYC event
Sony has revealed the 28-70mm F2 G Master (SEL2870GM) E-Mount lens along with the new Alpha 1 II flagship at its Creative Space 2024 event in New York City on November 19. The lens was designed to provide prime lens-like image quality for photography and videography, with strong image bokeh when used wide open.
The 28-70mm F2 G Master achieves its high performance from 14 groups of 20 lens elements, four of which are very low dispersion and six of which are aspherical elements. Nano AR Coating II is applied to the elements to reduce internal reflections and flare. Four extreme dynamic linear motors drive the groups during autofocusing, which is capable of keeping up with action photography at 120 fps and videography at up to 240 fps.
The lens has a minimum focusing range of 1.25 ft. (0.38 m) and an 11-blade circular aperture range of f/2 to f/22. Photographers can use the included petal-shaped hood to prevent glare along with 86 mm filters for creative color control. Videographers can switch off the aperture click to eliminate this source of noise and can adjust the zoom ring torque for better manual zoom control. Focus breathing is also highly controlled to better maintain the same field-of-view and magnification of subjects when changing focus within a scene.
The Sony 28-70mm F2 G Master measures 3-3/4 x 5-5/8 in. (92.9 x 139.8 mm) and weighs 32.4 oz. (918 g). The lens and buttons have water and dust seals for use in demanding situations. The 28-70mm F2 G Master produces extremely sharp corner-to-corner results throughout the entire zoom range, even while shooting wide open at F2. The high-resolution output is made possible by the three XA (extreme aspherical) elements and three aspherical elements built within the lens that minimize aberrations. The lens also features a floating focusing system that helps maintain internal stability. This focusing mechanism enables an impressive minimum focusing distance of up to 14.8 inches (0.38m) throughout the entire zoom range.
Staying true to the G Master lens lineage, the lens’ aperture up to F2 produces extraordinary bokeh, ideal for creating images that showcase a shallow depth of field. The 28-70mm F2 amplifies the G Master bokeh standards through a newly designed 11-blade circular aperture unit. Chromatic aberrations, which cause color fringing within photos, are effectively minimized with three Super ED (extra-low dispersion) elements and one ED element built within the lens.
