Sony WH-1000XM4C to launch soon with cost-cutting measures and one upgrade

The Sony WH-1000XM4 were launched in the summer of 2020 as Sony’s flagship Bluetooth headphones. They have since been replaced by the Sony WH-1000XM6 ($398 on Amazon). However, as a leak in early August had already hinted, the Sony WH-1000XM4 are set to make a comeback soon – as a more affordable mid-range model priced at around €250 in Europe.
This would make the list price €130 lower than in 2020. However, according to Winfuture, the lower price of the Sony WH-1000XM4C also comes with some cost-cutting measures. Most notably, the battery life drops to 27 hours with active noise cancellation (ANC) enabled or 34 hours without ANC, meaning the new model lasts three to four hours shorter than the original. In addition, the NFC logo has been removed, so quick pairing via the NFC chip is likely no longer available.
Other than that, little has changed. Sony has, however, updated the color options – the new model is available in violet, gray, or black. The Sony logo is subtly rendered in silver on all three versions, rather than in gold as on the older model, making it easy to distinguish between the two versions.
Sony is reportedly using the same 40-millimeter dynamic drivers as before, capable of reproducing frequencies from 4 Hz to 40 kHz. The Bluetooth chip is said to be upgraded from Bluetooth 5.0 to 6.0. Sales of the Sony WH-1000XM4C are set to begin on September 7. It remains to be seen whether Sony will fix the hinge issues or sell the headphones with the well-known defect.
