Source: CNet English Archive.org version
Sandwiched between the 2.8-pound VAIO TX and the 5.5-pound VAIO FJ in Sony's lineup, the VAIO SZ offers perhaps the the optimal compromise between size, weight, and screen and keyboard size. At 3.8 pounds, it's not the lightest model available--even within Sony's lineup--but it manages to be eminently portable without sacrificing a readable screen or a usable keyboard. Even better, the VAIO SZ has all of the features a business user will need, from an integrated microphone and Webcam for videoconferencing to a fingerprint scanner for security, not to mention a solid array of components such as an Intel Core Duo processor and an Nvidia graphics card. Of course, as with all Sony laptops, the VAIO SZ is pricey. Though it starts at $1,400, our loaded, premium test unit costs $2,500; for contrast, the 3.2-pound Gateway NX100X costs nearly $1,000 less (though it lacks an optical drive and a number of the VAIO SZ's other features). That said, if budget isn't your primary consideration, we think the VAIO SZ is an excellent portable laptop.

Sony VAIO SZ Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
I think this is a great little ultraportable for anyone who wants the latest technology in a small package. As of this writing, the Sony SZ line simply has no peer. It is the most full-featured Core Duo ultraportable series currently available, and if you don't want to sacrifice power for portability, this would be the series to get. Whether you should get the 110B or another SZ depends on your specific needs and budget. For me, this was the only SZ model I could afford, and honestly, it's not all that different from the other SZs. The lowest-priced model already has everything I need. Though I don't like Sony very much, I am quite happy with the notebook itself. I dislike the company's pricing, policies and support/service, but I have to say that the products themselves are usually pretty good.

60% The usual great looks, quick processor and superb battery life. What's the catch?
Source: vnunet.com English Archive.org version
Over the years Sony's Vaio range has gained a reputation for two things; looking fantastic and costing more than the average notebook computer. One of the most recent additions to its range - the VGN-SZ1XP - may have a small 13.3in screen and weigh just 1.7kg. However, lurking inside its brushed metallic chassis is one of Intel's latest core-duo processors; the T2400, which runs at a clock speed of 1.83GHz. Intel's core-duo processors may run at slower speeds than what consumers have become used to but make no mistake, giving a computer (effectively) a second brain makes all the difference.

Sony - Vaio VGN-SZ1M/B review
Source: IT Reviews English Archive.org version
Core Duo notebooks are coming thick and fast, one of the latest being the Vaio VGN-SZ1M/B from Sony. The Vaio SZ series sits neatly between the tiny TX series and the larger FJ series and is ideal for those people who think the TX series laptops are just too small for them. Weighing in at a respectable 1.9kg - even with its 13.3-inch, 1,280 by 800 pixel resolution, WXGA display - the Vaio VGN-SZ1M/B represents a great balance between portability, performance and battery life, with the added benefit of that large screen. Sony labels the Vaio VGN-SZ1M/B as the consumer model of the SZ range, but nothing is lacking in the build quality, with a magnesium alloy chassis and lid and a brushed aluminium wrist rest.

A beautifully designed notebook that's perfect for life on the move thanks to a low weight and great battery life. The emphasis on design is reflected in the price, but it's worth it. Despite all the research ploughed into the pursuit of all-day notebook mobility, we still rarely see more than five hours' life away from the mains. In an attempt to extend that, Sony has come up with the novel idea of fitting two separate graphics processors in order to save power. Not only do you get Intel's standard integrated Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950, but also a discrete nVidia GeForce Go 7400 GPU. The idea is that you can than slip from one to the other as needs dictate - just flip the two-position switch between 'stamina' and 'speed' and reboot.

When I reviewed the Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi I was stunned by how good it was, and what a great CPU the Core Duo T2500 is. Now Sony has raised the bar and created a machine almost as powerful and well specified, but in a slimmer, lighter and altogether more desirable package. Of course the SZ1VP is more expensive than the Acer and doesn’t sport the superb high-resolution screen, but one thing’s for sure, this is the best thin and light notebook ever to grace the TrustedReviews lab.

60% Own the laptop James Bond used to resign from the service
Source: vnunet.com English Archive.org version
Sony’s new Vaio is the very same laptop featured (albeit briefly) in the latest James Bond epic, Casino Royale. Its carbon fibre chassis and lightweight design will attract envious looks, but thankfully it doesn't carry any 007/Bond branding.Sony has, once again, shunned the more popular SD format and instead integrated a Memory Stick slot into the side of the laptop. It is a good quality laptop but £1,799 is an awful lot to pay especially when you can buy similarly specified laptops for several hundred pounds less. The new Vaio has a great feel to it, but we do feel it’s a case of style over substance.

While many notebook computers are beasts with huge screens and full sized keyboard, I prefer my laptops like my pizzas - thin and light. For serious work or play I prefer a desktop computer with a screen as large as possible but when on the move though I want something I can pack into a bag and not have it weigh me down. The Sony Vaio VGN-SZ2XP that I reviewed a couple of months ago, fitted nicely into this category. It wasn't the smallest and lightest notebook around but at 1.7Kg it was still thin and light enough to slip into a bag. It also offered some serious battery staying power to ensure that, depending on usage, it could last a working day.

Sony - Vaio SZ4 XWN/C review
Source: IT Reviews English Archive.org version
Sony's Vaio SZ4 XWN/C sits in the middle of a three-product family and is, as we've come to expect from Sony, a stylish, well featured, portable laptop with built-in security, all aimed at the business user. The SZ4 XWN/C is a stylish but costly, well featured laptop which is easy to carry around, but the thinness of the screen is something that will play on your mind unless you have it well protected.

Bottom line: The Sony VAIO VGN-SZ370P is the second-best ultraportable, next to the LenovoThinkPad X60 (Vista), integrating an optical drive and discrete graphics into a 3.8-pound frame. Pros: Under 4 pounds with optical drive and discrete graphics. Dual graphics. Sleek design. WWAN modem built-in. Excellent performance scores. Cons: Mushy keyboard. The Cingular EDGE network it supports is too slow for the money you'd pay per month.

Light noble subnotebook with two graphic adapters Others will definitely begrudge you the Sony Vaio VGN-SZ61WN/C, one of those light, compact, and fast subnotebooks. Designed in a preciously way, it combines performance and mobility in a new way. Furthermore, the VGN-SZ61WN/C attracts attention by modern and precious composite materials, additional security features, a switchable hybrid video solution, and a very bright 13.3 inch X-Black display.

Back in 2006, the SZ1 set the standard for power in a small package in the 13" notebook segment. Recently (in October 2007), the Sony VAIO SZ61 was introduced in Europe – two months after it became available as the VAIO SZ6xx in the United States. As the new high end of the SZ line, the SZ6 series is packed with power features. The VAIO SZ61WN is a good blend of portability without sacrificing on power and comes in a stylish and well built package. Its serious speed and processing power is hard to beat. The notebook has an excellent display and the resolution suits the screen dimensions well.
For me as an artist, speaking of technical equipment is always about versatile tools and means for expression and productivity I have to rely on. The SZ61WN is no exception and offers good value for money.

Due to its lightweight this Sz model is an ultra portable notebook with a fast Penryn T9300, a very bright 13.3" LED backlight display and a fast HSDPA access. The lightweight comes from the solid base construction, made of a high-tech composite material, called CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics), which also gives the machine its strength besides the lightness. Even with its initial high price, this notebook retains a good after life resell value, where one can get 70% of the original buying price, if one can find someone that wants to depart with it. Sony has replaced this model with a split of the T and Z models, yet this SZ series can be marked as a cult notebook for many business users and Sony fans.

The 4-pound Sony VAIO VGN-SZ791N falls somewhere between a beefy ultraportable and an all-purpose laptop.  The SZ791N's power is undeniable, but the keyboard and the mouse buttons raise questions about component quality. And considering Sony's $2500 asking price, we can't help but wish for a little more.

The VAIO VGN-SZ791N/X has a lot going for it. It delivers a top-of-the-line processor and plenty of RAM, a wealth of features, and great looks. The nearly $700 premium it costs over the similarly sized, similar-performing XPS M1330 makes the Dell system a better buy, but for the extra money, you get a more business oriented machine with hard drive protection and TPM circuitry.

When Sony kicked off its SZ series of ultraportables with the VAIO VGN-SZ170P, the company showed that it was the first to understand how important discrete graphics and an optical drive were to performance-seeking world travelers. The SZ791N becomes our new ultraportable Editors' Choice by delivering a combination of outstanding performance scores and long battery life.

Source: Comp Reviews English Archive.org version
The Sony VAIO VGN-SZ750N/C is probably one of the largest ultraportables on the market. While it may not have the smallest dimensions, it does provide a solid overall notebook experience with good performance, lots of storage space and excellent networking features. This makes for a solid ultraportable notebook for those looking at it as their primary computer system.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400: The NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 the competitor to the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400. Caution there are some versions with reduced momry bus available.

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS: NVidia GeForce 8400M GS is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7400 for laptops and technologically a slower 8400M GT video card (because of the smaller 64 Bit memory bus).

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip with shared memory on Mobile Intel 915GM chipset. It is the predecessor of Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The performance can be compared with the Mobile Radeon 9000 (with a 64 bit memory bus).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

T5600:

Slow clocked dual core processor based on the Merom core featuring virtualization functions VT-x.

T7200: Mid-range (at the time of annoucement) dual core processor based on the Merom core.

T7500:

The Core 2 Duo T7500 is a Merom based Core 2 Duo with 4MB Level 2 Cache. It is positioned in the middle class (in 2009) and performs on par with a modern P7550 or Turion II Ultra M640/M660.

T9300:

The T9300 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and similar to the T9400 but with a lower FSB.

T8100: Former mid-range Core 2 Duo based on the Penryn core that features FSB800 and VT-x virtualization functions.
