Hybrid book. Sony sends an ultrabook into the ring called SVT1311M1ES. An aluminum case and Intel Core i3 processor are to lure customers. A special highlight is the hybrid hard disk. It fuses the size of a conventional HDD with the speed of an SSD. Will Sony's Vaio ultrabook also be convincing in our tests?

The Sony Vaio T13 is a budget ultrabook, but an overall nice, solid and fast machine. It does have its downsides of course, as corners are cut in order to meet the low price, although I don't find any of them true deal-breakers.

Will the company successfully mobilise the wealth of expertise it has acquired from previous models, such as the Z series, to outperform the competition while adhering to Intel's standards of computing power, thinness and battery life? In terms of both design and price, the Sony Vaio T13 is closer to the Aspire S3 than the Zenbook Prime UX31A or MacBook Air. Despite a few shortcomings, the T13 is good value for your money, as long as you stick with the less expensive options.

Still, for around £300 less than its fancier peers this a usable Ultrabook, and even with an Ivy Bridge upgrade the price is lower than the competition. Screen quality remains disappointing, as it is with all the other low-end Ultrabooks, but if you’re craving a thin-and-light laptop on the cheap, the Sony VAIO T13 is the best of the current crop.

There are Ultrabooks out there that offer a slicker experience than the Sony Vaio T13 but, at £679/$769.99, it only really has two rivals: the Novatech nFinity 2367 Plus and the Acer Aspire S3. And while it can't quite match that duo for speed and performance, its build and design blows them out of the water.

Overall, the Sony Vaio T13 is a mixed bag. On the one-hand it is a beautiful piece of technology with an attractive price-point, while on the other it has limited power and disappoints on a few levels. The response time from sleep is great and for everyday usage you probably won’t notice the lack of power, or encounter any major performance issues.

Sony’s first 13in Ultrabook, the VAIO T13, is quite a bit bulkier and heavier than many rivals, but offers a design that sets it apart, excellent build quality and all the connectivity you could want. With claimed nine-hour battery life and as it’s also the cheapest Ultrabook on the market after the £670 Acer Aspire S3, we can definitely see the VAIO T13 making an impact at the budget end of the premium Ultraportable market.

While Sony often tends to price its gadgets slighlty more steeply that its rivals, the Sony Vaio T13 is one of the more affordable ultrabooks to arrive, giving it an important competetive edge. We were impressed by the fast screen boot-up, the slick design and the intuitive touchpad. Watch this space for a full review.

In general, the Sony VAIO T13 straddles the blurry lines between all-purpose, thin-and-light, and Ultrabook portables with reasonable skill. It compromises a bit on performance due to the hybrid drive, and some of the ergonomics could be better, but it delivers the lightweight design, the fairly roomy storage space, and (except for its lack of 5GHz Wi-Fi) the various connectivity options that are popular with consumers--all at an uncharacteristically (for Sony) affordable price. People who like the idea of an Ultrabook but don't want to sacrifice a lot of traditional features should give it a look

If you're looking for a well-designed and fast Ultrabook without breaking the bank, the $799 Sony VAIO T13 belongs on your short list. Sony also deserves credit for designing a clickpad that works well and offering support at the touch of a button. A budget-friendly Ultrabook is almost an oxymoron. Usually, the thinner the laptop, the higher the price. Solid-state drives and nice-to-have extras like backlit keyboards and high-res displays don't come cheap, either. For an Intel-approved system that keeps the price well south of one grand, the VAIO T13 is a respectable specimen.

Ultrabooks are certainly not hard to come by these days, but the Vaio T13112FXS from Sony aims to be different. It has a sub-$800 price tag, a 500GB hard drive and a new Intel Core "Ivy Bridge" processor. While a really great deal, it does suffer from a mediocre display and an uncomfortable keyboard.

In 2012, ultrabooks are everywhere. Ostensibly, they're thinner, lighter, possibly more stylish laptops. Sony's first ultrabook, the Vaio T, doesn't fall far from the tree of other thin Sony laptops like the Vaio Z, but it's far more affordable: this is ultrabook-as-budget-laptop, not ultrabook as high-end computer.

With its fast performance and low price, the Sony VAIO T13 makes a strong argument not only for itself but for the two ultrabook categories we mentioned in the beginning—models with "Ivy Bridge" processors and with hybrid hard drive/SSD storage systems. We think the former will soon be indispensable, though the latter will always yield to pure SSDs for speed. The T13 also yields to the HP Folio 13-1020us for battery life and keyboard comfort, though at $100 cheaper, it came close to unseating the HP as our ultrabook Editors' Choice.

Good looks, fast performance and long battery life are the standout features of the Sony VAIO T Series (SVT13116FGS). However, it's an Ultrabook that could use a bit of refining: we'd like a better keyboard, dual-band Wi-Fi, a matte screen and a USB port on the right side. That said, it's still worth checking out this Ultrabook if lots of CPU speed in a thin chassis is what you're after.

If you are looking for an ultrabook with solid performance and lots of storage space, Sony's VAIO T offers both of these for just under $1000. Buyers will have to contend with a number of tradeoffs to get this extra performance though. This is thicker and heavier than many ultrabooks at this price point. The Sony VAIO T13 (SVT13114GXS) comes across as a decent, though not particularly exceptional system in any of the usual criteria. It's got good battery life, though not as good as rivals. It has decent performance, though the hybrid drive design will make you wait a tick here and there. It's nicely styled, if a little commonplace these days and a smidge heavy. It's nice, but systems like the Editors' Choice Toshiba Portege Z935-P300 are much better in terms of features and performance, for only a few more dollars.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M:
The successor of the GeForce GTX 460M based on the new GF116 chip. The performance is about 13% better than the 460M but with similar power requirements due to hardware optimizations.

Intel Core i3:
2367M: Power efficient ULV processor clocked at 1.4 GHz without Turbo boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1000 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.
Intel Core i5:
3317U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.7 - 2.6 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3517U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 3.0 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
