The Chinese City of Hangzhou has installed smart mosquito traps in some locations. The traps mimic human breath and body to lure and capture mosquitoes, and they are touted to eliminate up to 30,000 mosquitoes daily.

Every year, the world records hundreds of millions of cases of malaria. Though popular for malaria, mosquitoes also serve as vectors for many other diseases, including dengue fever, Zika virus, yellow fever, West Nile virus and more.

In China, the prevalent mosquito-borne disease is dengue fever, with nearly 20,000 reported cases in 2023 alone. Beyond the diseases mosquitoes transmit, they are annoying, and their bites are considerably painful. The Chinese city of Hangzhou has taken a step towards controlling its mosquito population.

Multiple units of smart mosquito traps have been installed in a number of locations. Each machine can theoretically capture up to 30,000 mosquitoes daily. Chinese diplomat Mao Ning shared the details on her X account. From the video she shared on X, the machines keep count of mosquitoes captured, with daily ranking of locations with the most number. At the time of the recording, the traps had capture 8,971 mosquitoes for the day.

This machine is similar in operation to the one from Qista which worked by mimicking human scent and breathing. Over 300 units of the machines from Qista were deployed in France back in 2021. This highlights a trend in the tech world towards mosquito population control. A few months ago we reported on PhotonMatrix — a mosquito control gadget which detects and eliminates mosquitoes using lasers.
