Sharp presents double-notched Aquos R3 flagship

It looks like the Japanese do not find notches too distracting, but those who are not fans of odd designs will surely stir away from the new R3 models. (Source: Sharp)

If you are not a fan of smartphone notches, you most likely will not like the Aquos R3, but the model certainly has some redeeming specs like the 6.2-inch IGZO IPS display with 120 Hz refresh rate and HDR10 certification or the dedicated 20 MP video recording camera on the back. It also sports the Snapdragon 855 SoC like a true flagship, but the 3,200 mAh battery might not be a great choice in this case.

Continuing the tradition of dual-notched displays started with the R2 model in early 2019, the upcoming Aquos R3 flagship handheld from Sharp drastically improves most of the specs.

Even though the two notches that house the 16.3 MP selfie cam and the fingerprint scanner + home button may look a bit off, the other improved specs sure make up for the awkward design choices. The 6.2-inch IGZO Pro IPS display has a 3,120 x 1,440 resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate, plus it is compatible with the HDR10 standard. Furthermore, this model is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC coupled with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage. Sharp offers a 3,200 mAh battery with 11 W Qi wireless charger, but, considering the size of the screen and the HDR + Dolby Atmos certificates, the battery capacity might turn out to be insufficient.

The photography department also received an upgrade as it now sports a rear dual-cam setup, but only one of the two cams is actually utilized for still pictures, and this one comes with a 12.2 MP sensor. The other camera features a 20 MP sensor and is used exclusively for video recordings. Both selfie and rear cams offer AI-powered features like AI Live Story and AI Live Shutter.

No word on availability and pricing for the time being.
